The age old 'why do people like slash' question.

No real wanking from what I've seen but I'm sure it'll explode in a tidal wave of wank soon enough.

GAH! You beat me to it!

I didn't bother answering. Why should it? >:b

Icon love!

Also, I read that as "Why do old people like slash" and was rather interested, as I wasn't aware old people were particularly fond of slash.

I took pity, and posted a link to the essay that made me 'get it.'

It might not be the smartest time & place to post that question, but I can understand why the poor kid did it. I was once in that place myself.

I can understand as well, it's just I've seen that question and similar ones like posted a LOT at FFrants, so in my POV it's a worn out topic.

It wasn't meant as a swipe at the post or anything... I agree. This kind of thing happens in all communities.

Eh, I can understand that, I guess. I feel the same way about people who ask why I write fanfiction and not original fiction. You just get sick of defending yourself.

She just strikes me as someone who's new to fanfiction and just mystified by the whole slash phenomenon. Having been in that boat, I can relate. She does claim to have read other discussions about slash before, but maybe she didn't read the ones at fanficrants. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Boat. Same. Remember. I tried slash and found that it wasn't my cuppa. I was surprised women were in the driver's seat most of the time. Mystified even. Many questions. I did a few searches, though and came up with a lot of different answers rather than posting. One of the best answers, IIRC, was at Veela, Inc. I don't know if the article is still there.

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt also. But, I think the better part of valor for newbies would be to do a search (why, women, fanfiction, slash) and let teh mouse do the walking. Occasionally that doesn't work, but it usually does. (I came up with zilch when I tried to figure out what a BNF was!)

Unrelated, but I worship at the altar of your icon. ::fangirls Miss Piggy::

And much as that is a rather flamebaity question (unintentionally, but still asking for it), I'd rather have people ask than just go around not getting it and not bothering to figure it out.

Yes. I sort of wanted to say, "Go read some and then you'll know. Or not."

Or at least she'll know if and why it's not her cup of tea.

It seems to me like a reasonable question. Yes, it's been asked before. Different people tend to answer each time. And there are readers and writers who aren't going to wander back through dozens of posts to find the last time someone asked the question.

I can't see any reason to want to slap the OP: she doesn't act as if she's trolling. And if she's not interested in slash, and wants to know why other people are, it's a legitimate question.

And then one can always hope that fandom will eventually mature to the point that this sort of question won't start flamewars.

I agree with everything you just said, and would like to add that I think it's a lot wankier to want to slap someone for asking people their opinion.

Want to see a slightly wankier discussion of yaoi going on right now? Go here.

[I think it's a lot wankier to want to slap someone for asking people their opinion.]

I don't actually want to hurt the OP, but I do get frustrated and tired of having to defend tastes.

Aside from the whine about "oh here we go about RPS again" and I was like, huh? Who mentioned RPS?

Huh? You referring to my comment?

All I said was that the slash question ALWAYS brings in flames, and the only WORSE question than that is if, instead of asking about slash as a whole, they're asking about RPS...

Is it wrong of me to want to say "There's wank here, but it's not from where you think it is" to you this time?

Nah, actually, I don't see the wank, well... anywhere. Not even from you. Although, honestly, I don't think the girl needs smacked - sure you're sick of answering that question, but if that's the case... just roll your eyes and walk... err, click away. It's as simple as that.

I'm thoroughly impressed that the thread managed to stay really civil, though. That was a nice change of pace.

Looking back I realized I may have jumped the gun here. Usually this question is garunteed to bring in the wank but this time it didn't happen.

They had a civil converstation instead. Who knew?
