[info]aria_star says in a thread in [info]inbetweenies On my mom's side, I'm a direct descendant of Pocahontas and of a black slave... thus making this officially the stupidest "I'm not racist but..." argument I've ever seen in my life. Mind you, the whole post is made of crazy, so there's more than just race wank, there's size wank too. Enjoy!

I guess what I mean is: doesn't an unadorned "descendant" imply "direct"? If King So And So isn't your great-great-great-etc-grandfather, you'd just say you were related to King So And So, rather than saying you were his descendant.

Sounds about correct to me. Descendant implies direct relation and cousin implies indirect relation.

I think, in the past at least, it meant following down the family tree through sons, rather than daughters. Sometimes, it seemed to mean the eldest sons, or the heir.

Atleast that was the impression I got from a couple of programs, but I'm not an expert by a longshot.

I'm no expert either... I've just been being amateur family genealogist.

I don't know. Maybe it's like I'm related to someone whose sister married King So And So. Sorta silly though. To me that's like saying, "My Dad once saw the Pope/King/Elvis/whatever."
