[info]aria_star says in a thread in [info]inbetweenies On my mom's side, I'm a direct descendant of Pocahontas and of a black slave... thus making this officially the stupidest "I'm not racist but..." argument I've ever seen in my life. Mind you, the whole post is made of crazy, so there's more than just race wank, there's size wank too. Enjoy!

I actually hadn't heard of that until I moved to WA and started talking to linguists (well, they're the only people who do fieldwork who I talk to) doing fieldwork with native Americans in Canada. I sort of assumed it was a Canadian thing.

Then again there's basically no Native Americans in Los Angeles so we don't talk about them down there, which could also be the issue!

I've never heard of it either, and I do have Native American in my background.

I do think it depends on where you live and who you come in contact with.

I was inspired to wiki it (finally -- been meaning to do that since forever), and it is apparently a Canadian term that's spreading to the US now. Suddenly everything becomes clear!

That's what I always thought too, until the guy came and gave a guest lecture in our class. Apparently there are Native Americans in Los Angeles. For instance, they now run the casinos.

...Los Angeles has casinos?

Oh well. That'll show me. (And I thought all those were in central CA.)

Well, not in Los Angeles city limits, no. But if you go out east in the Inland Valley past Moreno Valley, you'll start seeing signs for the reservation territory -- and, of course, for the casinos.
