The Nazi Legacy: Dead Jews and "No Smoking" Signs
Over in LJ Land there's this fun little community by the name of

damnportlanders. It's an awesome comm for the most part, but does have its share of, shall we say, disproportionately passionate folks. Exhibit A:

bennetfox.

Yesterday he posted a rant entitled To the Anti-Smoking Gestapo. From zero to Godwin's in 1.3 seconds? This can only get better.

The crux of his complaint is the smoking ban placed on Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, Oregon. Bear in mind that this ordinance went into effect on 1 January 2007, so I'm not sure why his frothing rage had to marinate for 5 months first, but okay.

bennetfox is incensed with this inconvenience to his personal liberties, and lashes out at everyone who supported this ban. All of whom are planet-killing SUV owners who deserve a painful and messy death.

And as I watched this unfold yesterday, I was just going to let it be stupid all on its own. But

bennetfox returned today, enthusiastically pointing the Gestapo to other major cities that they can "ruin" next.

But really it's all okay cuz he's just doing it for the lulz.

I'm mildly allergic to tobacco smoke, so I can't really complain. I'm sort of glad, actually. Now I can go to bars and concerts and things.

But the amount of venom I've seen in The Dayton ~~Barely~~ Daily News's column where they print anonymous call-in editorial comments is amazing. It's like, how dare people object to someone else's smoke, why don't they just stay in their houses and never leave if they don't like it?

Of course, the real gold in the whole thing is that the Speak-Up comments are usually complaining about people who hate Bush and those dadgum liburls who don't understand how that nobody needs to worry about Bush suspending habeas corpus unless they have something to hide. But a smoking ban passes with a pretty solid majority vote? Someone needs to stop those monsters in the government before they take away all our rights?

	Oh you silly person. Don't you know the right to spend hundreds of dollars a year to destroy your lungs and eventually die a slow and painful death is so much more important than any kind of right to privacy? My Terry Pratchett icon seems so apt for this wank. (Reply to this)(Parent)
