In apology for having to eat my hat, I present you this piece of work.

There was a meme that went around LJ. It measured your "coolness" factor, among other things.

The creator of the meme decided that it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and used it for unscrupulous purposes goatse.

People are unhappy, to say the least.

Edit: I should add that as of right now (1:38 AM EST), the post is still safe for work. I can't guarantee where the links in it might lead you to, though.

I still remember the first time I saw Goatse. I was reading signatures on a petition to change the name of the Lord of the Rings Two Towers movie (no idea if it was a troll or not, but the petition writer claimed it was disrespectful in the wake of 9/11) and someone posted a link to Goatse, claiming it to be an anti-Tolkien site... and of course, I clicked it.

I don't even remember HOW I ended up seeing it, it was so long ago. I just remember... Seeing it. The truest form of the internet. Of course, that was way back when you couldn't see the real address of a link when you hovered over it; you had to trust people not to hit you with something awful.

Those were the days.

It's bad that with some friends, I have to actually check each link they post because I don't know if it's going to be worksafe or not, since there is a tendency from them to post disgusting things.

Usually I don't click. Bangedup.com

Bangedup.com - I think that's where I first saw it. Bleagh.

Yeah, I used to mod a board where people did that all the time. Either they'd disguise the link or post an inocuous looking link that led to a mirror of Goatse (or other shock pictures like Tubgirl). We called it "Ninja-goatseing".

Heh, "ninja-goatseing." What a mental image.

Of course, I have Goatse to thank for desensitizing me to everything else on the internet. Nothing bothered me after that first time I saw it, not even vore.

Goatse: internet Darwinism? Only the strong survive the ass?

Me too... well, almost anything. I was still grossed out by Tubgirl and pain4.jpg (which was a collage of really gruesome pictures, including severe injuries from car wrecks and such), but a lot of other stuff suddenly didn't seem as gross anymore. *g*

Oh God. XD That needs to be iconed.

Goatse I can handle. It's been three years, maybe four, since I saw Tubgirl, but still the memory almost makes me vomit.

I clicked on a link in a chatroom. Popups everywhere.

Of course, I was on my mother's computer. At work. In a high school. With a connecting staffroom door.

No. I eventually gave up trying to close them and just rebooted the computer.

Remember when you right-clicked on a page, and you got a dialogue box saying "DO NOT STEEL"? And it was always, always on the most crap websites?

I liked to right-click to open links in new windows, especially on crapass fanpages with poor set-up where it was hard to get back to the main page.

I hated when the box said things like, "Picture stealer!! Caught you!1!!!!" *twitch*

I have no idea how I first came across Goatse. I just remember being a little disappointed that it wasn't more traumatic, because I wanted to have That Moment. By which I mean, if I had to see it — and apparently I had to — I wanted to have That Moment. I wish I hadn't come across it at all, but, well... it's the internet, and I'm kind of a whore for it.

I think I was trying to look at pictures of cats and one of the "cat pictures" was actually The Goatse. And then I started at it for like thirty seconds before realizing that was what it was. I was just sitting there thinking, "Damn, how is that a cat? That can't be a cat. There's no fur. Is it a wound on a cat? No, it really can't be a cat. Oh, wait, is that— Oooh. Uuuh, I should exit before the roommates look over."

Huh. I actually had to look up the goatse.cx site to find it. I don't know how I managed to miss it in the years between 99' and 04', but I did. Maybe I just got lucky?

Yeah, because (at least where I hung out) the damn thing was EVERYWHERE. People on a board I modded would link to it and either disguise the link or use a redirect/mirror, so I actually became desensitized to it.

[dies laughing]

I first encountered both Goatse and Tubgirl thanks to the vast cesspit of trollery that is Usenet (probably on alt.gossip.celebrities). I first got online in October of '98, and very quickly learned that there were certain URLs I shouldn't click on. Anything from rotten.com was bound to be scarring--in fact, I think that's where I first saw Tubgirl hosted.

I've only looked at rotten.com once- clicked a link to it, saw the words "decapitation by helicopter blade" on the front page, X'ed out and never went back. I've heard there's all kinds of nasty crap to be found on there.

I was young and naive and clicked the link in IRC.
