In apology for having to eat my hat, I present you this piece of work.

There was a meme that went around LJ. It measured your "coolness" factor, among other things.

The creator of the meme decided that it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and used it for unscrupulous purposes goatse.

People are unhappy, to say the least.

Edit: I should add that as of right now (1:38 AM EST), the post is still safe for work. I can't guarantee where the links in it might lead you to, though.

I must be new to the whole terminology, but how can a meme be hacked? I thought a meme was just something a lot of people did or said.

First of all, I don't think they hacked the meme. They WERE the meme.

A meme is an idea that exists only to replicate itself -- hence a lot journals filled with quizzes and random stuff that invite you to plug your stats in and get a pretty picture that invites other people to plug their stats in and... And so on.

For some reason, beckyzoole is blindly insisting that the meme's server/programming must have been hacked, because of course she's giving the creator the benefit of the doubt! For some reason she refuses to realize that people could be so nasty to plan to turn http://lalalalala.com/image.php from a lame graph to goatse after a certain amount of time, or enjoy spreading the data around.

Fixed.

I think Anonymous even accused beckyzoole of having a crush on the meme creator, due to her adamant belief in his innocence.

I've always loved seamless scrolling gif icons. :)
