On skate shoes and possible shenanigans
Another [info]customers_suck wank:

[info]tijay makes a lengthy post about a kid coming into the store wearing heelies. Kid, while skating, apparently trips over the steps on a nearby escalator and bangs his head.

Result? 911, kid half-dead, in coma (prolly and hopefully died on the way to the hospital, he bleed all over the escalator making 4 people clean up after him. Bitch. His mom is crying and yelling at everyone, escalator gets stopped. People complaint about elevators that are slow and that we need to fix our escalators.

Then we have team meeting, and at least three people confess that they told him and his mom to stop skating. Making our liability 0. At least now, we have banned these goddamn shoes.

That incident just made my day. I will remember it on the bright side for the rest of my life.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand they're off. 324 comments and counting.

Edit: The wank, it hits stupid_free--many thanks to [info]hangingfire for the link.

...dude.

There's hating kids and hating skate shoes and being annoyed that a kid was careless and bled everywhere, and then there's just NO.

A small cold comfort: Head and face wounds bleed profusely, due to all the capilliaries in those areas, but actual overall blood loss is not as bad as if larger blood vessels were opened.

If the story's true, the kid probably got, at worst, a concussion (and may need a few stitches) and tijay is just getting their hateboner on.

As for heelies-- they look awkward to me, compared to the models where you had two wheels to pop out (and where you couldn't just lean back and start skating).

I will admit to having dark thoughts of "accidentally" clotheslining some kid who comes whizzing by too close to me, but I seem to still have enough decency to have not acted on it.

Yeah, I've lifeguarded the past few summers and the Heelie-related accidents are common enough. One kid was whizzing around the side of the pool and a rock stuck in the wheel, sending him flying face first into concrete. Not pretty.

The parents actually blamed the lifeguard on duty who--suprise, suprise--was actually watching people in the water. It's not like the kid was actually breaking a rule we could tell him off for. And you know these would be the same parents who hate it when lifeguards enforce rules and tell their child "what to do."

Well, you know... When one of the kids slammed into my coworker who had something with her leg and she felt...

That sounds entirely credible due to both it's logic and detail. I don't think I've ever seen somebody attempt to mumble online before.

Most retail workers dislike Heelys, as they have been hit by children going too fast on them.

lol, wiki. Did you know that the elephant population has tripled in the past 6 months?

Y'know what I hate? Those shoes for toddlers that squeak whenever the kid takes a step. Whoever invented those needs to be locked in a room and have to listen to them FOR THE REST OF HIS OR HER MISERABLE LIFE.

I fully admit to hoping some kid would get hurt falling off those damn shoes because those stupid kids would do that through crowded stores and knock into people and/or displays.

But I was hoping for a little bruise or a hurt butt. Not something that required a hospital visit! Jesus.

Funny this comes up. The last time my mom and I went to the mall there was a girl on those shoes skating around the food court. When I said something about it my mom, who had her back to her, asked me if the kid was wearing knee pads and a helmet.

I said no, of course not, kids didn't wear that stuff for those shoes.

My mom then pointed out that parents make kids who ride bikes and rollerblade wear that gear, so why shouldn't the kids in heelies wear helmets too?

Why not, indeed.

Personally, I think it's the fault of the manufacturers for marketing shoes with wheels on them as daily footwear and sports accesories like bikes and rollerskates. A lot of parents who haven't had anything to do with either in some time might not realize that there isn't a lot of difference. After all, the wheels are smaller, right?

Maybe it's the best that poor kid's wheelie career ended early. I mean, he might want bigger wheels and soon he'll be roller blading.

And do we know what's the hardest thing about roller blading?
Telling your parents that you're gay.

It is for the best in the long run.

Reading this has been therapeutic- I realized that my aversion to Heelies is that the things are creepy, what with the strange silent gliding approach of the young 'un. They aren't fast, they seem to be easier to control than the ones that were around when my kids were in gradeschool, and they're really pretty harmless.

Now, a four year old "helping" mom by pushing a shopping cart she can't see over? That shopuld be banned.

But I *like* the silent glide. Wheelies are rare enough where I live that it still looks all surreal and cool when I see a kid moving down a supermarket lane without visible means of propulsion. Like comic book tropes entering real life: OMG that kid's flying--!! Oh no. Wheelies..

Kids don't know better about these things, that's why we have adults.

...and those shoes really got to go, outside of familiar designated places. In the Old Days, and some places, they were good ways to get around (my mom used it even when she was all grown), I rollerblade to school, and on streets with one level stores (and not the glassware one!)...but it should really be common sense that you don't rollerblade where there are stairs leading down and breakable things and Other People.

I feel bad for the kid's parents, but damn, this be a lesson to other adults. (...and it is the adults that buy them those shoes and drove them to the store and didn't take them to a PARK or around the block).

People like tijay makes me sick, kids are annoying and the furthest thing from angels starting out, but again, that's what we adults are here for. ...and I do believe, where dumbass parenting exist, the community should step in, if only to nag "I don't think it's a good idea to let your kids climb those book shelves" if only because they'll never change otherwise and neither would their kids and the whole thing just repeats unless Darwin intervenes. If anything, when I speak calmly to those offended parents the kids somehow understood they are in the wrong and then behaved better in spite of the parents exclaiming their rights to be rude and endangering their offsprings.

Nowadays, I imagine every wanky mention of Darwinism makes Darwin roll in his grave (it should be noted that Darwin himself didn't coin the phrase "survival of the fittest"; that was a product of social Darwinism).

To every such wanky mention I think: if you want to see more Darwinism in action so badly, why aren't you dead yet?

Also, Tijay's icon freaks me out. What kind of animal is that?
