Small, but quickly growing:

[info]drsaddam posts a link to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth movie in [info]_scientists_. Given the community, would you expect the response to be...

a) hey, thanks for the link.

b) I don't think that's completely legal.

Oh, I'd seen the one about Strikeout. But, um, the "people who say 'how are you?' are stupid and Democrats will bring the next Great Depression and World War" one is a new special brand of crazy.

Though my favourite sentence is one in the post I linked:
As far as I know, no creature on earth simply has rights because of being alive.

I may have been educated in French schools, but I seem to like about the US constitution way more than this guy.

That's it, I want a third party! Way too many people like this stinking up the GOP. Maybe if we have pundit yaoi-athons onstage at the next convention, they'll all leave?

How about a fifth party? The Libertarian Party is too evil and authoritarian, and the Green Party is too wimpy and white.

First off they are raising the minimum wage and they will go after corporations, raise taxes, and give everyone free health care. How is this good? Because it will cause the next great depression.

Whut?

Best of all Iran, China and North Korea will all be appeased like crazy, giving them a chance to build and sell whatever weapons they want, and invade their neighbors as they please.

Mmhmm, because the saber rattling our republican leadership is doing is sooo much more effective.

Oh, let me tell you about Cincinnati.

Actually, let me tell you about Ohio. The House of Representatives had a bill pending that required women working in strip clubs to keep six feet away from the patrons at all times. The big, celebrated compromise that just passed is that they can get close to each other, they just can't touch each other and the clubs have to close by ten o'clock. Also, at least in southwestern Ohio (which is madly conservative, I've heard that the northern and eastern parts aren't so bad) people will complain that this Presidential administration is too liberal, but howl that they are being deprived of personal freedoms on an Orwellian level because the state just started enforcing the ban on smoking in public places that passed last November. That's the sort of state we're talking about. And Cincinnati has a reputation for being notably conservative here.

It's a gorgeous old city right on the Ohio River with some of the highest hills you'll find in the flat bit of the American midwest. Back in the mid and late 19th century, it was right up there with St. Louis and Chicago as one of the big, sophisticated cities in this part of the country.

Then it kind of declined when the railroads made the river not that important and nobody heard much from it until the 1970s or 1980s when it had a series of freakouts about pr0n and obscenity. There was a big protest over an art gallery exhibiting Robert Mapplethorpe's photography because one of those loud Community Values decided that it was just porn and had those scary gay men in it. Larry Flynt, who's behind the Hustler smut line, lives/d in or near Cincy and the company is based out of that area. He and the city had a fairly famous go-round about whether he and the company were allowed to continue existing in Cincinnati. (the most wonderful thing to come out of it is at one point along Interstate 75 there's an exit for a northern suburb that has on one side of it the Hustler Superstore and on the other side the giant frightening Jesus statue built by a weird evangelical cult. Approaching from the south, it looks like giant Jesus is reaching out for the porn store.)

I still really like it, personally, probably because I live near Dayton, which is where the people who don't find Cincinnati small and closed-minded enough go. But it's a fairly big city that has a lot of people who pride themselves on the fact that it "thinks like a small town" as the Cincinnati's weekly independent paper put it. They have a reputation for having terrible race relations, but I'm not sure how fair it is to still say that since most of that is based on history up to a riot in one of their worst neighborhoods back in 1994.

So basically, it's a fun place to go hang out if you're from the corn towns around here and don't feel like putting in the effort to go to Louisville, Kentucky or Indianapolis, Indiana (which are much larger and cooler, but almost two hours from this part of the state) and most of the people I know from Cincinnati are cool. But when Cincinnati does batshit moral/religio-political extremist, it goes all out. For example, someone just opened a Creationist natural science museum in one of the Kentucky river towns that are part of the Cincinnati metro area. One of the radio stations up here carries his show on Saturdays, and I listened to a little of one episode because it's hilarious. One of his proofs against fossils is a petrified hat someone found in a mine. For serious.

Oh, and thanks!

I really felt like crying this year when the most left wing of my flatmates started bitching about the NHS as it forced the rich to help the poor. Yep and this is the most liberal person I live with.
