If you collect alimony, you're a moneygrubbing whore.
Okay, so [info]cbpiz posts to [info]bad_service about her father-in-law passing away and his girlfriend of five years, claiming to be the man's wife, cremating him within 24 hours without consulting his family/next of kin or having any legal paperwork of any kind. Distressed because she and other family members did not get a chance to pay their respects and receive closure, she calls this bad service on the part of the funeral home.

Cue.... alimony wank!

Yes, that's right. Forget the possibly irresponsible/unethical funeral home and the possibly shady circumstances, it's all about them moneygrubbin' hos because alimony is charity and true feminists would have none of it.

Some lone voices of reason pipe up, nobly excusing [info]cbpiz due to her distressed state while at the same time patiently disagreeing with her, but no, alimony is for the weak.

Uh-huh.

The wank is dying down, as the OP seems to realize this isn't the time/place, but was it ever vociferous.

I'm afraid the whole thing was tainted in my mind the minute I read the first 'G-d'. Anyone who can't type out the damn word, even in the context of positively blessing someone with it, IMO has other issues aplenty.

What, even the Orthodox Jews?

Fair enough, although I doubt this woman is a strict Orthodox Jew. I was going by the group of people who don't want to say the word God aloud or write it down because that would be 'taking the lord's name in vain,' but if saying "God bless you" is taking the lord's name in vain, what isn't?

You don't even have to be Orthodox to feel kind of uncomfortable writing out God. My rabbi took the stance that it is okay to type out God, but he firmly believes that writing it out by hand is a very bad idea.

There's actually a reason for it:

In Judaism, it is a habit to write down "G-d" because they have a belief in the inherant sacredness of the very name of God. In other words, they believe that if you write the full name "God" out on a piece of paper, and then something happens to that paper -- say it gets ripped or you spill coffee on it or something -- it's like ripping up or spilling coffee on God Himself as well. So they write the name "G-d" so you aren't actually writing the name out, and if you spill coffee on the phrase "G-d" then there's no problem.

I'm sure there is a Rabbinical argument for doing this online as well -- protection against a web site going foom, hackers fooling around too much, yadda yadda -- but I've always just assumed it was habit. But, anyway, that's why you may see "G-d" here and there, it's a sign of religious respect.

You know, if we got God some Shout wipes, it wouldn't be an issue.

I always felt G-d was kind of a fad, though. It's not like it's God's actual name ...

[disclaimer: I was actually raised Catholic and ain't Jewish myself; I just ask a lot of questions of my friends.]

Eh, I also know it's not something everyone does, kind of like the Rosary or lighting candles in a church. Everyone does this all differently -- I was surprised to learn that a friend of mine (who was almost a priest, natch) regards things like lighting candles at a saint's shrine as "kind of superstitious." When it comes to religious customs, as long as it ain't being forced upon me or anyone else, I just try to learn the reasons why, and then leave people to it out of respect.

Of course, if I run into someone who's especially irreverent, we also have fun doing things like analyzing some of the different religious customs and then seeing whether there's some kind of sexual kink that would relate to it...

In some modern Pagan practices, kink is arguably the source... :D

Especially if you read Buckland. He's got flogging as a part of the initiatory rites, for example.
