Do you tip your barista? What about your doctor?
First wank so TIP WELL and I promise not to use the cheap lotion. You believe me, right?

After a nice exchange earlier today, I was actually beginning to have warm feelings about [info]seattle. Not for long.

[info]deguisement freely admits she has already wanked trolled posted in the New Yorkers comm about tipping baristas. Surprisingly, that did not go completely swimmingly. My favorite comment was:

I'll tip my NY baristas like i do my Seattle baristas when they make drinkable fucking lattes like my Seattle baristas do.

Whee! They're off. [info]gomezticator and [info]oui_je_danse are of course involved in tl;dr threads of nothingness. Some highlights:

SO bartenders don't deserve tips either?

wouldn't know; i'm straight edge.

So a couple hours later, the OP makes another damn post. This time, she wants to know our Thoughts On Tipping McDonalds. Bonus wank on stripper morality.

Aaaaand more reasons for to never go to the US ever. The tipping. I'm supposed to tip my hairdresser there? What? MCDONALDS? Puh-lease. At every tipping wank it's 'oh, but waitresses etc. get less than minimum wage so you should tip!' and now it's 'on, but these people only make minimum wage, so you should tip!' That's just not logic, people.

Most baristas, hairdressers, etc work second jobs. I'm a barista, and sometimes tips are the only reason I get to eat that day.

I was supposed to tip the guy who did my little tattoo in LA? Shit. He was so great to me and I was so nervous and I love my little tattoo. Now I feel bad.

Needs more funny. Tipping wank just makes me dread the next time I'm going to the US, I just now I'll be unintentionally rude every time I buy something for not tipping right, because I plain forget that them's the rules.

To everyone now fretting about coming to the US and not knowing who/how to tip:

For every one person who insists all Americans should tip [insert laundry list of 100 jobs here], a bunch of the rest of us only tip waiters, delivery people, baristas, and only when someone is our regular [x job] or does an outstanding job, and there are plenty of people who don't even tip under those circumstances. Trust me, you'll be totally fine.

I misread that last part as "stripper mortality." I was all fired up for a second, thinking "Aha! I knew those six-inch heels were death-traps!"

In other news, I'm wearing my "Support Single Moms" shirt. It's decorated with little silhouettes of naked ladies swinging from poles.

As a former McDonalds employee, I was not allowed to accept tips. The boxes are for the Ronald McDonald house, silly. Plus, uhm, we actually made minimum wage and were not performing any extraordinary service (a waitress actually sorta takes care of you, carries heavy things and ensures you're okay. a hairdresser makes you look pretty. If anyone at McDonalds should get tipped, it's the poor grill people, not the cashier.)

I did get tipped once while working as a writing center consultant. The tip took the form of cookies. It was unexpected and unneeded (because the student wrote a great paper-- it's the really shitty writers that should've bribed me) but did make me smile.

So, when I used to work at a Barney's the policy was "no tip jar". But this was at a pricey mall, people actually got mad. Not because they wanted to tip so much, as they wanted someplace to throw their change!

So we put a mug on the counter and hid it when the manager came through.

At the candy and ice cream shop I used to go to, there was a tip jar and a little sign saying "Please tip, it helps us put our seniors through college." I actually appreciated that sign because at least I knew. Sometimes I tipped and sometimes I didn't, but at least I knew.

Also: people in the Seattle Community who exclude Starbucks from the "local business" category need to move somewhere more than a hundred miles from the first Starbucks.

(Disclaimer: I gave up Starbucks for Lent about five years ago, and I was so rich by Easter that I've pretty much stayed away since, except in times of great need).

I really don’t understand all these different coffees. There’s instant, Arab/Greek/Turkish, filter and that machine that condenses the stuff. I drink the lot and enjoy it all, maybe I’m not sophisticated enough. I hate going into Starbucks because, I all I want is a coffee, not a barrage of options. Anyone got an idiot’s guide?

that's another rule, anybody who's in a union doesn't get a tip. i'm a big fan of unions because collective bargaining gives labor the opportunity to demand of the employer a fair wage. in that circumstance, you don't need my gratuity.

Mmm... tipping wank. Delicious. I don't tip baristas at Starbucks, but I do tip at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf as well as family owned type places. Why? Well it's a bit of a long explanation... According to my friends who are baristas (one at a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and the other at a family owned place) Starbucks uses a lot more automated machines so it's more about just pressing the right button than having the skill to make the drink.

Also, the easiest way to tip is to just double the sales tax (at least where I live, in Los Angeles). Very little math required.

However, I'm always unsure what to tip hair dressers and pedicurists (I'm pretty sure that's not an actual word)... Usually, it's a couple of dollars, but I have no idea what the appropriate amount is.

I tipped my cab driver $40 today because he not only drove me all over creation, waited for me while I was in the bank and the auto-parts store, and made very pleasant conversation during the drive, but he also changed my dead car's battery for me (the whole reason I was taking a cab around to begin with) without batting an eye.

For stuff like hair stylists, tattoo artists, cab drivers... things like that? I usually do a base 20% and then add to it if they went above and beyond like this guy did today.

2. In the free-for-all style of a bar, you are mostly dealing with cold drinks. Do you really want 200 degree coffee/americanos/sugar filled lattes flying around? I am picturing lots of burns and stains and general danger. A little gin and tonic on your hand isn't going to hurt you.

It is if it's HOLY gin and tonic and you're a VAMPIRE. Ha!

I have never tipped baristas because they do not seat me at a table. They do not come back and check on the quality of my food. They do not take my paper cup away after I am finished. So yeah... I'm not leaving a tip for a grande plain coffee that I take away from the establishment and toss away in a bin once I'm done. Starbucks = Fast food. Fast food =/= tips.
