Do you tip your barista? What about your doctor?
First wank so TIP WELL and I promise not to use the cheap lotion. You believe me, right?

After a nice exchange earlier today, I was actually beginning to have warm feelings about [info]seattle. Not for long.

[info]deguisement freely admits she has already wanked trolled posted in the New Yorkers comm about tipping baristas. Surprisingly, that did not go completely swimmingly. My favorite comment was:

I'll tip my NY baristas like i do my Seattle baristas when they make drinkable fucking lattes like my Seattle baristas do.

Whee! They're off. [info]gomezticator and [info]oui_je_danse are of course involved in tl;dr threads of nothingness. Some highlights:

SO bartenders don't deserve tips either?

wouldn't know; i'm straight edge.

So a couple hours later, the OP makes another damn post. This time, she wants to know our Thoughts On Tipping McDonalds. Bonus wank on stripper morality.

Aaaaand more reasons for to never go to the US ever. The tipping. I'm supposed to tip my hairdresser there? What? MCDONALDS? Puh-lease. At every tipping wank it's 'oh, but waitresses etc. get less than minimum wage so you should tip!' and now it's 'on, but these people only make minimum wage, so you should tip!' That's just not logic, people.

Most baristas, hairdressers, etc work second jobs. I'm a barista, and sometimes tips are the only reason I get to eat that day.

Most jobs that have tipping have their tips taxed and, on the assumption of incoming tips, a lower wage for their troubles. Waitstaff at most places earn below minimum wage based on a legal loophole of assumed tips. It blows both ways.

I hung around the FOB comm at LJ for as long as I did because the emo kids could whip up some pretty sweet graphics and posted all the good interviews and pics. Unfortunately, emo kids have stupid!wank like solo porn stars on steriods.

I thought that the McDonalds thing was supposed to be disingenuously ridiculous on the part of the OP, but maybe I'm giving her too much credit.

I think you're right. I haven't been to a McDonald's in some time, but we sure didn't get tips during the (very, very brief) time I worked there. Which I will now go back to repressing.

I worked there about a year and a half, and I think I got... two. Three if you count the dude who gave me a tiny thing of chapstick after I commented that they were cute.

For a while their credit card machines were printing "tip" spaces on the slips just as if you were at a real restaurant. I was all, Bzuh?

I think that's a default setting on credit card slips. I've seen the tip scale on my chiropractor's credit card receipts, and you sure as heck don't tip someone who you call "Doctor."

When I worked there, we weren't allowed to accept tips, even if customers gave them to us. They had to go into the charity box.

Oh, there you are. It's getting so if the word "tip" appears in the wank I can expect to see your duck icon and your promise never to visit the USA.

Okay!

Canada would like to get in on this boycott you're offering. And by 'get in', I mean, we don't want you to come over either.

Should I tip you for this advice or not?

Er, no. Depending on where you're from, services in the US are probably cheaper because they pay their staff less. It all balances out.

I admit, when I visited the US I thought the way they tip was strange, but it's really not that hard to spare a few dollars if you can afford to visit in the first place. So... your logic makes no sense either.

Oh my fucking god. Every single time.

You don't tip people, we got it. Maybe you should just make yourself an icon that says, "This tipping practice in the US is stupid and I will never do it" and save yourself from writing YET ANOTHER goddamn stupid comment.

I always have to bite my toungue typing fingers from writing UNIONIZE!!1

But anyway, since whenever someone brings this up at customers sucks, there are always a lot of waitstaff who say they prefer the tip system since they get more money like that, I figure that if/when I get to the US my non-tippingness won't matter anyway.

Minimum wage, in the U.S., covers basically doing non-variable, non-customer-service things: taking your money and giving you stuff.

If someone does more than that--makes food or drinks, cleans up after you, does your hair--*and* gets minimum wage, there's some tip involved, depending on how much they do, but it's usually 10% or below.

If someone does more than that and they *don't* get minimum wage, you tip 15 to 20 percent.

Minimum wage in the U.S. is in no way close to "enough for an adult to live on," but that leads to a whole 'nother rant.
