Do you tip your barista? What about your doctor?
First wank so TIP WELL and I promise not to use the cheap lotion. You believe me, right?

After a nice exchange earlier today, I was actually beginning to have warm feelings about [info]seattle. Not for long.

[info]deguisement freely admits she has already wanked trolled posted in the New Yorkers comm about tipping baristas. Surprisingly, that did not go completely swimmingly. My favorite comment was:

I'll tip my NY baristas like i do my Seattle baristas when they make drinkable fucking lattes like my Seattle baristas do.

Whee! They're off. [info]gomezticator and [info]oui_je_danse are of course involved in tl;dr threads of nothingness. Some highlights:

SO bartenders don't deserve tips either?

wouldn't know; i'm straight edge.

So a couple hours later, the OP makes another damn post. This time, she wants to know our Thoughts On Tipping McDonalds. Bonus wank on stripper morality.

Needs more funny. Tipping wank just makes me dread the next time I'm going to the US, I just now I'll be unintentionally rude every time I buy something for not tipping right, because I plain forget that them's the rules.

I'm planning on going soon. I hope most these people realise that if I don't tip right, it's not because I'm a stingy jerk, but because tipping etiquette in the USA confuzzles the hell out of me and just seems so screwed up. Not to mention it seems to vary state to state.

DDDD:

You can actually find guides that will tell you exactly how much a particular person is tipped. Some of them are pretty awesomely precise, though a couple do vary - I was raised to tip pizza deliverers differently than regular food workers (with a dollar per item ordered, rather than 15%) but that particular custom is rapidly going by the wayside and being replaced with just the standard 15%.

What I find kind of interesting about tipping is that Americans used to never tip except under special circumstances, because it was viewed as very European and pretentious. And now we're the ones who tip for everything.

Those tip guides are helpful, but maybe not in this case since many of them specifically say not to tip Starbucks workers (logic being that Starbucks is akin to a fast food chain, and you don't tip at fast food restaurants) unless you've ordered something complicated or not on the menu.

I don't get to have an opinion on the whole tipping baristas thing because I don't frequent Starbucks. I do find it difficult to take anyone who says that Starbucks frappuchino is an artform very seriously. Sounds a little too much like Subway and their "sandwich artists" to me.

I don't know about artform, but their caramel cream frappuchino is the best thing ever. Doubly so, because I don't drink coffee contaminated stuff.

I bought their syrup and make them at home as well. Mmmmmmmm :)

15%??? For bringing my pizza? Hell no. They a: make minimum wage at least (though to be fair, in Oregon waiters make the same minimum as everyone else) and b: aren't responsible for checking on me several times throughout my meal to make sure that everything's going okay. They get two bucks, three if I'm feeling rich.

here they make minimum wage of 6.50... and gas is 3 something. which they pay for themselves. I actually have a lot less problem giving them 15% than tipping friggen starbucks.

*shrugs* Even with the price of gas today, with the pizza place being 2 miles away, they're using maybe a fifth of a gallon to get to my place and back. My $2-3 dollar tip covers that nicely.
