Do you tip your barista? What about your doctor?
First wank so TIP WELL and I promise not to use the cheap lotion. You believe me, right?

After a nice exchange earlier today, I was actually beginning to have warm feelings about [info]seattle. Not for long.

[info]deguisement freely admits she has already wanked trolled posted in the New Yorkers comm about tipping baristas. Surprisingly, that did not go completely swimmingly. My favorite comment was:

I'll tip my NY baristas like i do my Seattle baristas when they make drinkable fucking lattes like my Seattle baristas do.

Whee! They're off. [info]gomezticator and [info]oui_je_danse are of course involved in tl;dr threads of nothingness. Some highlights:

SO bartenders don't deserve tips either?

wouldn't know; i'm straight edge.

So a couple hours later, the OP makes another damn post. This time, she wants to know our Thoughts On Tipping McDonalds. Bonus wank on stripper morality.

To everyone now fretting about coming to the US and not knowing who/how to tip:

For every one person who insists all Americans should tip [insert laundry list of 100 jobs here], a bunch of the rest of us only tip waiters, delivery people, baristas, and only when someone is our regular [x job] or does an outstanding job, and there are plenty of people who don't even tip under those circumstances. Trust me, you'll be totally fine.

In addition, a lot of places (many stores that bag your groceries, etc) have policies forbidding tips. I generally ask, and that seems to work.

It can still be dicey, so when unsure, I tend to watch whether the other customers tip or not, and follow their lead.

Precisely. A little observation goes a long way. (Sometimes I don't even know when to tip, and I am American!)

I would add most of the people who don't have any sort of medical degree but their job involves touching your body in some way. Hair, nails, massage, etc.

And people that carry around you or your stuff. Taxis, bell people (but you can be like NO I DON'T NEED HELP TO THE ROOM).

Vegas is kind of its own tipping land too. People do a lot of shit all the time like get the cab, or get you a chair at the pool. Since these are small tasks and there is no "percent," about a buck a person is the going rate.

I'm American, and I never know who to tip or how much besides waitstaff. Sit-down restaurants are the only places where I ever feel fully comfortable in my tipping space.

I tend to err on the side of too much, but you know what? I think it's ridiculous that we don't pay our service workers enough that they need tips. I don't stiff people because of that, but I hate the feeling of being nickel-and-dimed. I'd rather just pay more for a product to start with.
