We don't use Romaji here.
learn_languages is a LiveJournal community where people interested in all sorts of languages can collide. It's like the lesser cousin of of linguaphiles, in a way.

brookieboo likes to post in Romaji (here's an earlier one), because, and I quote: "The kind of (pirated) software I have does not allow [kana] to be installed."

Ensue wank.

whatsgoinon chimes in, with comments disabled, of course: "fusakenai yo, bitches."

This would probably be a lot funnier if I knew Japanese.

Funny in the way that you're laughing at him because he obviously thinks he's so cool for knowing Japanese when what he said doesn't make any sense. :p

What he probably meant to say was fuzakeruna, which means like quit dicking around.

But instead of sounding cool, he just sounds lame.

*Nelson voice* Haha!

I am so saying that to my brother next time he hogs the shower.

Hmmm. *scratches head* I've seen "fuzaken ja ne" for "Screwing around, isn't that?" in a Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi song lyric, but I don't think I've ever seen "fuzakenai". (The Japanese are infamous for dropping syllables when they slangify stuff, to give the idiot credit he probably doesn't deserve.) I'm going to guess it's baka-droppings but it could be dialect or something he heard in anime that he THINKS is dirty because it got translated as "fuck off". While dubs and official subs tend to minimize stuff, translating "kuso" (shit) as "damn" and the like, fansubs tend to make stuff dirtier in my experience. *shrug*

Dayum, only vaguely related but a couple posts before that one you get some /extremely/ wanky "I don't want to learn French, I hate the French language, blah blah, but I'm still going to go study in GENEVA and think I can not learn it" wank. ::mutters obnoxiously:: Tu as une vache tête, buddy!

I didn't think that one was all that wanky, really -- sometimes languages just don't appeal to you. She'll learn some French whether she likes it or not just by living there, but intensively studying a language you don't like is probably a recipe for disaster.

It wasn't the not wanting to learn the language part that was wanky per se, it was the attitude of utter refusal to want to even try even though Geneva is a French speaking area.

[This French thing is really an isolated case of a language I'd go out of my way not to study. I suppose it wont make sense to most, but its just something I consider really undesirable. However I imagine I'll just have to get over my big fat French boycott. Maybe I might even begin to like it! Scary thought.]

That part struck me as wanky, but being a Francophone/Francophile and having to have dealt with the utterly moronic anti-French sentiment the past year or so, I'm probably being vastly oversensitive.

Well at least I have the good sense to admit it. Though it would have been much more to form in these parts to just wank away anyway.

Napoleon would work. Or Liberty from the Delacroix Liberty Leading the People. She's kinda scary.

True. Some people like studying languages to see how other languages and such have influenced and interacted with them, or how they've adapted, etc.
The French REFUSE to allow any non-French words to enter their language... or at least, they're doing their best to keep it from happening. It's gotten to the point where they've forbidden any government workers to use foreign names for things. You can't call it a CD, you can't call it the internet, stuff like that.
(The really funny thing is, sometimes stuff will come out, and they won't have come up with an "official" French word for it, yet... so I wonder, do the French government workers have to stand around at the water cooler going, "Oui, oui, I just bought one of those new... uh... um... thingies?")

Actually, that's just the Academie Francaise that wants to keep all foreign words out. Actual French people could give a shit. I've heard French peppered with words from languages ranging from Italian ("Cin-cin!") to Arabic ("Chouia," "Kif-kif") to English ("Tu veux un steak, toi?" "Okay!"). In this case, the will of the government is definitely not to be conflated with the will of the people.

But if she doesn't want to learn French, why (how!) is she going to study in Geneva?

I mean, I don't like the German language, which for some bizarre reason refused to click in my brain, but I don't go to Berlin to study.

Perhaps not wanky, but definitely odd, to me.

Probably because she likes the programs offered at the university there? Besides, her entire post was concerned with the question of whether or not studying French was necessary for her to succeed and get around in Geneva; she didn't make the assumption that it's not.

I think she's probably looked into what language the classes are taught in. If not, I'd pay to see the look on her face when she got there.

*shrugs* I'm learning Japanese, but I'd honestly rather go study in China if I had the option.

...on the other hand, I'd gladly learn Chinese if I thought I actually had the brainpower to learn a tonal language. But I'm pretty sure I don't, so...
