Atheists: Like Those Mean Girls in High School, in a Way
Over at the LJ community [info]dark_christian, [info]nebris reposts an article called  An increasingly outspoken community of atheists and agnostics is getting fed up with being marginalized, ignored and insulted. It's mainly about Dawkins's and Hitchens's success with their books about atheism and how it gave a lot of Americans the guts to own up to the fact that they're atheists (apparently atheism is next to communism in the good ol' USA).

It's a direct success when [info]roseross replies, in the first comment:
Militant atheists are the only group other than the Dominionists who scare me because they are so intolerant of others' spiritual beliefs. They insult people who believe differently than they do. They insist that ALL will some day believe as they do, because they're the only people who have it right. They often feel using the government to enforce their worldview is a good idea. In short, the only way to tell the difference between a militant atheist and a Dominionist is which creed they intend all of us to adhere to. For our own good, of course.
People call her on her bovine excrement, but she insists:
Can't count the number of times I've heard militant atheists long for religion to be made illegal. After all, from their point of view, spiritual beliefs are all childish delusions and it would be doing a favor to take the purple unicorns away from the silly people who have not reached the lofty state of atheism on their own. They seem to have no idea why any of that would be insulting to others, or perhaps they just don't care since the insulted folks are just braindead religious folks in the first place.
But why wank when you can have an orgy?
 [info]bobdole asks:
The only other group? So militant atheists scare you in this regard but militant Muslims, for example, do not?
The definitions of the words creed and faith need clarification. Religious scientists get their feelings hurt. People get flashbacks of being outraged. The Constitution is invoked. And much, much more for who is willing to rake through the tl;dr and the "quote-marks."
And will somebody think of the non-Abrahamicists?

I love [info]swisscelt's repeat failure to grasp that the "polytheism is the middle child" comment was a joke. Yes, pumpkin, anyone with half a brain and a grasp of history realizes polytheism is older than monotheism, at least if you're talking about the extant polytheisms versus the extant monotheisms.

MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA syndrome indeed.

The constant flood of orientalist 'omg militant Islam IS THE WORST THING EVER OMG' spattered throughout that discourse (like pearly drops of spooge) annoys the pants off me.

Falling fomerly-airborne terrorist nutters are devastating, but rare, in the USA. Dominionists, not so much. The 'tend to the plank in your own eye' thing keeps coming to mind.

Annoyinnnngggguh.

And roseross is whinier than a whining whinebox of whinelicious whininess.

If you want militant atheists, go to MetaFilter. Whenever someone asks a religion-related question or posts a religion-related link, there is this whole brigade of people who do seriously feel that people with faith (even if they're not particularly religious) are deluded, that religion is evil, that intelligence and religion don't mix. I've heard that "purple unicorns" remark too.

Here's some examples.

Still, it's "being mocked and disagreed with publicly is totally as bad as when we try to legally force you to follow our rules," which continues to be mockworthy.

All the atheists I know are French and they have been brought up non-religiously, so mainly they don't care about people's beliefs one way or another. But if you grow up in a very religious family US-style, with prayer in restaurants and everything, I can understand why they would be a bit rebellious about it.

I should have said "vocal groups in the U.S." Don't really care what creed they espouse. Fundamentalists bother me; fanatics scare me.
And the atheists have *many* fanatics in their midst. Like the Dominionists or the zealot Muslims, they have looked at an infinite universe and declared: "I have it all figured out and my way is the only way." A starting error that is unlikely make for tolerance of others.

But... that's... so sane.
I'm just gonna take your word for it that [info]roseross is batshit elsewhere. Looking at the unexpanded threads was enough to convince me that splooge was flying from all sides.

And the consequences of being publicly atheist, or agnostic, or even spiritual-but-non-Christian, for those of us who stick our necks out, are often drastic, including losing jobs and custody of children and sometimes even being thrown in jail for whatever the police can find on us, or in some cases even thrown in jail for charges that are completely fabricated.

Wow, it's tough to be an American atheist. As a loving Christian I'll show compassion in a slightly patronizing way for your plight. And also add that it's not too late to repent.

I always thought that (sane) atheists are the group least likely to expect to be "proven right" in the end.

Cause like, if I'm getting tortured in hell for not believing in L. Ron or something, I will almost certainly be aware of it and have plentiful time to consider my mistake. If I'm blissfully ignorant to pushing up daisies and being eaten by worms, it's a little hard to have the last laugh.

Militant atheists are the only group other than the Dominionists who scare me because they are so intolerant of others' spiritual beliefs. They insult people who believe differently than they do.

Because I know that when I hear crazies talking about replacing the American Constitution with the Bible civil code, the next place my mind jumps is in fact, "Oh, no, gasp! What if they insult my beliefs?"

Now, granted, I'm an atheist so I'm automatically "intolerant of others' spiritual beliefs," since [info]roseross said so; "smug and convinced I've gotten it all figured out," since some of the agnostics I meet online say so; a "fundamentalist atheist," according to any number of Christians who've read Dawkins, although I haven't yet figured out what beliefs I'm supposed to be fundamentalist about; someone who worships Darwin, according to the Christians in my neighborhood; and someone who "tried to oppress Christian beliefs," according to one of my students, since he insisted on knowing my religion when I told him the Bible was not an academic source for his rants against homosexuality and I told him I was the dreaded a-word. So I'd better get back to being all those things instead of worrying about Dominionists.

I have nothing to say about this topic that hasn't been said already, but I do have a story:

A few days ago, one of my co-workers was heading out for a performance review. As she passed me, she said, "pray for me, Irony!" I laughed and told her, "I can't! I'm an atheist!" She replied, "well, whatever you worship, pray for me!" And I, figuring she hadn't quite heard or had mistaken the word for something else, repeated: "I can't! I'm an atheist!"

A bit later, I passed by and overheard the person who was supposed to be giving her the performance review explaining, using small words, what an 'atheist' is.

Ok, now as a white, upper middle class Christian, I will admit, I haven't had to deal with a lot of problems from US society. But seriously? Losing jobs I might see in the Bible Belt (although that's a case I'm sure the ACLU would love), but how are the police supposed to know you're an atheist?

This sort of smacks of "the lurkers support me in e-mail" evidence to me (although I am willing to be proved wrong).

And that said, Christians? We are really not being persecuted in America. I understand the feeling. But no.
