Atheists: Like Those Mean Girls in High School, in a Way
Over at the LJ community [info]dark_christian, [info]nebris reposts an article called  An increasingly outspoken community of atheists and agnostics is getting fed up with being marginalized, ignored and insulted. It's mainly about Dawkins's and Hitchens's success with their books about atheism and how it gave a lot of Americans the guts to own up to the fact that they're atheists (apparently atheism is next to communism in the good ol' USA).

It's a direct success when [info]roseross replies, in the first comment:
Militant atheists are the only group other than the Dominionists who scare me because they are so intolerant of others' spiritual beliefs. They insult people who believe differently than they do. They insist that ALL will some day believe as they do, because they're the only people who have it right. They often feel using the government to enforce their worldview is a good idea. In short, the only way to tell the difference between a militant atheist and a Dominionist is which creed they intend all of us to adhere to. For our own good, of course.
People call her on her bovine excrement, but she insists:
Can't count the number of times I've heard militant atheists long for religion to be made illegal. After all, from their point of view, spiritual beliefs are all childish delusions and it would be doing a favor to take the purple unicorns away from the silly people who have not reached the lofty state of atheism on their own. They seem to have no idea why any of that would be insulting to others, or perhaps they just don't care since the insulted folks are just braindead religious folks in the first place.
But why wank when you can have an orgy?
 [info]bobdole asks:
The only other group? So militant atheists scare you in this regard but militant Muslims, for example, do not?
The definitions of the words creed and faith need clarification. Religious scientists get their feelings hurt. People get flashbacks of being outraged. The Constitution is invoked. And much, much more for who is willing to rake through the tl;dr and the "quote-marks."
And will somebody think of the non-Abrahamicists?

If you want militant atheists, go to MetaFilter. Whenever someone asks a religion-related question or posts a religion-related link, there is this whole brigade of people who do seriously feel that people with faith (even if they're not particularly religious) are deluded, that religion is evil, that intelligence and religion don't mix. I've heard that "purple unicorns" remark too.

Here's some examples.

Still, it's "being mocked and disagreed with publicly is totally as bad as when we try to legally force you to follow our rules," which continues to be mockworthy.

Well...
Outside of America, there have been plenty of antitheist governments that were either in statute or in practice against all religion. One need look no farther than the People's Republic of China. In history I could also point to revolutionary France (unless you consider the Cult of Reason to be a religion) or the Soviet bloc.

Now, though? The claim "atheists have persecuted religious people in the past" never seems to show up until the "Christians are being oppressed by those evil atheists, right now" claim is challenged.

The progression of time is pretty much irrelevant in all religious debates, no matter which side is doing the arguing. Religious debate is the real secret of time travel: a liberal American Protestant is magically transported back to the 15th century and becomes part of the Inquisition, a liberal British atheist is magically transported back to the era of Soviet Russia and persecutes Orthodox priests.

I think the Tardis is actually powered by these kinds of debates.

Well, the current incarnation of the TARDIS set, at least, does have that kinda up-and-down motion going on in the pillar in the middle; maybe it really is powered by wank.

Oh, it definitely hasn't stopped in China. Just look up Falun Gong or the Catholic Church in China. Land seized? Imprisonment? Mysterious disappearances? Beatings by police? Widespread censorship? I could go on and on.
But this is really off-topic. Back to the original wanking post, I really doubt if any one of the people arguing have been threatened with anything worse than derisive laughter or perhaps social ostracism for their beliefs or lack of them. Problem is that nobody likes to use accurate words when they can use extreme words. So instead of complaining about "intolerant" atheists or Christians, it's always militant atheists or Christians, as if the guy with the shrine to the Flying Spaghetti Monster has got a cache of grenades in his trunk.

Yeah, but the guy with a shrine to the Flying Spaghetti Monster cannot really be called an atheist, can he?

I can't remember if they hated all religions or just the Catholics, but the period of Mexican government that sparked the Cristero Rebellion comes to mind as well.

All the atheists I know are French and they have been brought up non-religiously, so mainly they don't care about people's beliefs one way or another. But if you grow up in a very religious family US-style, with prayer in restaurants and everything, I can understand why they would be a bit rebellious about it.

What you're describing is "antitheism".

Excuse the irony but A-FUCKING-MEN. There's no such thing as a militant atheist. Atheists who take their non-beliefs to the extreme of "there should be no religion/god should be outlawed/atheism is my religion" are no longer atheists, they're antitheists.

They keep using this word, I do not think it means what they think it means.

There also seems to be an annoying number of Jew jokes there. I mean, c'mon, they're not the ones proselytizing and getting all up in other people's business. Can't we live and let live here?
