How many goths does it take to build some fine Swedish furniture?
Ikea runs an advert that a particular product will brighten up your dorm room, "unlike a creepy gothic roommate, who can be a bad influence."

Gothfash, the lj goth fashion community reacts predictably, with a post titled, "I am outraged by this and I am going to write a letter."

Don't miss the derrogatory useage of the word 'norms' and how the oppression of the pasty, whiney, and emmaciated is ABSOLUTELY LIKE the systemic racism directed at African Americans!

The icing on the cake is that the OP, [info]mme_archel is community mod and owner.

Thanks to a mouse for the head's up!

People were offended by this stereotype and stood up for themselves. Who are you to discount this?

How did "Someone made a joke about the group I feel I belong to in a small text box of an ad which practically noone will ever read! I'm going to write a letter and you all should, too!" become a "standing up against oppression" type thing which should be admired by all of us who do not have the courage to fight the establishment, or something?

Someone is clearly lacking in perspective.

But this one's nice:

i think goth often gets a bad rap in the mainstream media

I'd like to hear a bad rap about Goths, please!

Actually, "to get a bad rap" is acceptable and well established English slang; it carries the same meaning as "bum rap."

–noun Slang.
1. an unjust accusation, verdict, or punishment: He was sent to prison on a bum rap.
2. an adverse opinion or judgment considered undeserved or unjust: The review was a bad rap, but I liked the play.

Huh. I didn't actually think that making a pun meant that you didn't know the meaning of the word in question, but apparently I was wrong. Thanks for letting me know!

Yo yo yo.

They came and they conquered,
raped and they pillaged,
bringin' down the smack
on every peasant village.

The Visis smacked the Romans,
the Ostros beat the Huns,
they were big and strong and hairy
though they used spears not guns.

. . . Well, that's the kind of Goths ought to be writing bad rap about, anyway.

Collaborate and listen!
Goths wear black even while they're pissin' -
Trying! To be fey and spritely,
Though don't they know they're just endin' up frightly?
Could they ever tan? YO. I don't know.
Turn off the lights - and they glow.
Inside the mall the goth crowd's hard to handle,
Drawn to Hot Topic like a moth to a candle!

GOTH GOTH BABY
WANKTASTIC GOTH GOTH BABY
WANKTASTIC...

Not a rap--actual song. Still funny:

Oh, I'd be thinner, I'd be taller
Go clubbing in my collar
With skin pale as a moth
Dressed in black, I'd go creeping
While the normal folk are sleeping
If I only were a Goth

With my hair up, I'd look fancy
Like Siouxsie and the Banshees
With silk or velvet cloth
Dressed in boots, never sandals
And the room would be lit with candles
If I only were a Goth

Yes I'd wanna die
From the bottom of my heart impure
Would I like another clove? Well, sure
And after that, we'll go listen to The Cure

This reminds me of Sara Vowell's bit where her Goth Name is Debbie and she represents the pink of Goth.
