There's a post in [info]stupid_free about people defending the terrorist actions of an animal rights group.

The stupid shows up to defend itself, and wank explodes. Way too much wank to link to.

While I'm certainly not on their side, technically our canines don't have to be for eating meat. They're certainly used for that purpose, but look at the gorilla. Huge ass canines and the most meat they devour are bugs.

Yeah, but it's the easiest way to wear them down. Seriously, when I was younger, they were even more pointy, and it's nice to have the option to eat something that'll make it harder to cut my tongue on my teeth.

That... doesn't really make sense.

I have really sharp teeth. When my adult teeth came in, they're sharp at top and as a kid, I used to cut my tongue on them. They're still sharp, but I don't cut my tongue like I used to.

Gorillas eat meat. Not often, mind. It's bloody scary to watch them hunt.

/has seen far too much Discovery

I love it when people are all, "Awww, the apes, they eat no meat! They're fluffy!" And then you see them rip a collobus monkey to shreds and fight over the remains.

You're sure you're not thinking of chimpanzees?

Granted, I have read somewhere that, in addition to bugs, gorillas eat animals as large as small lizards. But that doesn't seem like something to have a hunt over.

Now chimps, on the other hand, do hunt animals as large as monkeys, and some troops apparently cannibalize the casualties of battles with rival troops.

Okay- serious question time- why are bugs not considered meat when talking about omnivores' habits? Is it because they're not fuzzy? Or because of some other reason?

I'm no biologist or insectologist or whatever, but I think it's because bugs are different than vertabres(sp?). They don't have muscle structures like us, the same way they don't have blood, bones or organs like us. And since muscle tissue is meat and bugs dont' have it, they're not considered meat. They're protien, for sure, but like nuts and eggs and other meatless protein things.
That would be my educated guess, with no checking up on Wiki or anything.

That makes sense, I guess- I'm coming at it from a "Eating a living, breathing organism, which eggs and nuts aren't."

Still- your explanation pacifies me... for now. *shifty eyes*
