I'm just not a dog person. I don't get the whole drive two hours, spend thousands of bucks, you shouldn't have a dog if you don't have a zillion dollars attitude you get online.

The attitude is that you shouldn't have a pet you aren't able/willing to pay for if things go wrong. You don't have to be a 'dog person' to understand that if your pet needs medical treatment, it gets it. Regardless of your circumstances. If there is no way, give the dog to some one who can and will give care to it.

I don't agree with people who believe that you must ALWAYS be in a perfect financial position if you're a pet owner (or parent, as seen in many other wanks) because life circumstances can change without warning, but I do believe that if you're a pet owner, particularly of an animal that commonly requires vet treatment, you should set aside something for emergencies.

The people in that thread were surprisingly unwanky considering how conversations like that usually go.

perfect financial position

Oh, I agree. We have been in a position where we were stuck for cash but had a sick pet. We had to muddle through somehow.

Within months of buying my first pet, I ended up in and out of hospital. It was pretty tough just paying for her food at that point, and I'm not sure what I would have done if she'd become sick.

Hey, it's OK. The OP of that post was driven off the forum crying already.

Yes how horrible for her to be told to take care of her sick pet.

Really, my heart breaks.

Don't tell me you're a bird person. I don't want the shame.

At least get the vet to look at it, that isn't thousands of bucks. And if it's too expensive, then either try to beg for money or quickly and humanely put doggie to sleep. To let any living thing - err, except a plant *looks guilty* - potentially die of thirst seems needlessly cruel.

*admits to having accidentally killed an african violet.*

*when i composted it, it resurrected itself all over the garden.*

I grow Orchids, my roses are trying to eat the house, I've got rare and fragile stuff left and right in my flower beds.

I kill african violets. The things are cursed.

except a plant *looks guilty*

And just how is that plant going to learn to be tough if you go around watering it all the time?

I explain this to my ficus tree every few months.

Would you say the same thing if it were an animal you liked? No? Then please shut the fuck up. Nobody goes into dog ownership- or indeed ANY pet ownership- expecting to need expensive medical treatments any more than they go into life expecting to never get sick or be in an accident. Shit happens.

I'm just not a dog person.

So you aer not a dog person.

So you are not someone who'd drive 2 hours and/or take a day off work to get the sick animal to the vet?

So you wouldn't spend more than a few hundred bucka on a vet bill?

I have an idea for you:

THEN DON'T GET A DOG.
