How about a story in which the dog is acting strangely, the owner takes the dog to the vet, the dog neatly disgraces the owner at the vet by getting filthy dirty before going in, refusing to let herself be weighed, and giving the vet a hard time about putting the thermometer in, only to have her owner be told $58 later that there wasn't actually anything wrong with her, and dogs can have off days too?

My first time owning a dog, and she's a 78-pound lab/heeler mix that is too damn smart for her own good. I swear, she rolled in the mud right before we went to the vet because she wanted to make me look bad. :P

I think it is the received wisdom among pet owners that:

1. Pets, unlike people, do not sometimes feel blah for no reason at all.

2. Baby pets, unlike baby humans, do not just sometimes want to sleep and sleep and not eat, just because all that growing stuff is tiring.

3. Pets are immortal, and if yours dies at any age before 20, it's because you're doing it wrong

4. Pets, unlike humans, cannot get heart disease, cancer, or inheritable diseases unless the pet owner has made some horrible pet management mistake.
