It's not rocket surgery.
Msnbc.com has a recurring feature, "Ads of the Weird". This week's column discusses an Australian PSA which implies that men who speed are deficient in the sausage department. (I know, I know, a clever idea that no one ever thought of before!)

The comments are full of everyone's Personal Philosophy of Driving, which (like driving itself) turns wanky and obnoxious immediately:

Or maybe people just like to drive fast and it has nothing to do with being macho or manly. Driving fast doesn't mean you have to drive stupid, and I think it's just as likely that people driving BELOW the speed limit cause an equal number of accidents as SOBER drivers driving ABOVE the speed limit. If you don't like someone driving fast behind you, GET OUT OF THE WAY. Especially if you're in the left lane people c'mon, learn how to drive.

John B

Aaaaand they're off. After wading through a couple pages of this, it's enough to make me want to give up driving forever and dust off my trusty old bicycle, rather than chance sharing the road with some of these people.

Anyone who thinks it's actually safer to drive the speed limit has never driven on I-15 between Vegas and LA. If you aren't going 90, you're going to be hit and flattened, I swear to god.

Same could be said for I-17 Phoenix D:

So far, the fastest average speed I've travelled (not excluding the three hot-spots mentioned above, even) was US 12 between Pullman and Royal City, on the Friday before Winter Break, where sustained speeds between 90 and 100mph are common. This was particularly thrilling the one winter there was ground fog the whole way, and people were navigating by following the next guy's tail-lights. We made it the 340 or so miles from Pullman to Olympia in 5 hours and 10 minutes... including the time it took to chain up for the pass.

That's also when you get those hundred+ car wrecks, no?

*has heard fog horror stories*

The first time I visited LA, I took a shuttle -- big clunky van -- from the airport to the school I was visiting. There was heavy traffic, and the van was going in right among the packs of cars -- and I looked at the speedometer and realized he was going 90. HOLY SHIT.

I eventually got used to it, and now I zoom along with the rest of 'em.

I was floored when I discovered people go 80+ down the part of I-40 that goes through the mountains of the Carolinas and Tennessee. Them curves ain't fer zippin'.
