At live journal community [info]gymrats, what could possibly get everyone more excited than an in depth discussion about squats?

A good wank apparently...

For those not in the know [info]gymrats is a community for responsible and enlightened gym enthusiasts. What this means is that those who are more concerned with being thin, than being healthy, or who are afraid of free weights, muscles, or eating, need not bother joining.

All of this is mentioned quite clearly in the user information, which is also (quite clearly) mentioned on the main page.

As you can imagine this mostly goes ignored by your average under eater, and as such is a pet peeve of your average gymrats regular.

After seeing more than their fair share of posts with the same ‘stupid’ questions some community members are less than friendly when they encounter a user who is either too lazy, or in the case of [info]emziem, too nutrition deprived to actually read.

[info]gentlemaitresse is, as usual less than gentle with the noob, here, and here too.

Op! Looks like she/he/it could be a troll!

A poem and some sympathy. Srsly.

Small, but worth the effort, that's the [info]gymrats mentality folks!

Troll or not, I can't help but want to punch most of the posters in the mouth.

Way to internet diagnose Keira Knightley, guys. It's that kind of attitude that makes it uncomfortable for me to eat a fucking salad in public.

/internet is srs business wank

The people at gymrats are rather salty even when you don't piss them off. I would say that I have never seen gentlemaitresse have anything nice to say to anyone, ever.

I had a run-in on a different community with her yesterday. She was lecturing me in a very snooty manner about a topic that it was quite clear she didn't have the first clue about-- as in, ten seconds on Wikipedia would have saved her the trouble. Which is kinda funny, considering what she's doing here.

(Her userinfo is a hoot, too. I'm a beyond-modern woman. In fact, I often think I'm ahead of my time. "Beyond modern" isn't quite the thing that springs to mind coupled with "survivalist dominatrix", but that may just be me.)

Keira's naturally thin, I think. They actually had to photoshop her boobs for the first movie when they had all that cleavage going on, and in the other two she fit quite nicely into a man's costume.

And the lighting of that picture makes her look skinnier.

She's got a skinny top half and very muscular bottom half. I'm kind of in love with her legs and ass, actually. I get annoyed when people call her anorexic cause if you look at her in skirts, it's abundantly clear that she's not. She's *always* been that shape.

Doesn't anorexia leave you a bit physically weak anyway? I'm a healthy eater and no way could I pull off those stunts.

600 calories a day? D: I wouldn't call that "living."

I call 600 calories breakfast, unless I replace it with 2.4mg of nicotine.

I don't know what 600 calories is . . . except something that's hard to pronounce around my mouthful of cookie.

Wow, the people in that comm are...unfriendly.

Though it reminds me, I need to get off my fat ass and get some more potato chips work out.

There is something slightly horrifying about looking at pro-ED comms while eating Doritos.

I find them slightly less horrifying when I have food to comfort me, personally.

Only slightly less, but it reassures me that damn, these chips are good. And I'm not missing out on them.

While, gentlemaitresse shouldn't be diagnosing the person from her user icon, the fact the no one else skimmed the OP's community list and realized "yes, she probably does have a problem" boggles.

[info]gentlemaitresse's icon has the sexiest back evar.

Also, after flipping through other posts in that community, I want to hump its leg express my affection toward it in a respectful and noninvasive manner. Female weightlifters who are neither superathletic nor obsessed with doing 300 leg presses with the machine set to 5 pounds "so they don't bulk up"? Who knew they existed? I may have to start reading the comm.

Despite the comm being bitchy on occasion it is simply the best comm I have ever found for weight training and general nutrition/health information.

It is definitely worth reading, not only will you find tonnes of info, but if ask serious questions (and you read the user info), you will get serious and helpful answers :)

Mostly OT: but it burns me a bit that LJ is going after fanfic that depicts fictional juveniles getting laid, and is perfectly fine with all these pro_ana groups, many of whom are full of juveniles supporting each other's attempts to starve.

Slightly more OT: normalcyispasse is pretty easy on the eyes.

Just clarifying Gymrats isn't pro_ana: The OP is a member of a whole shitload of pro_ana groups.

Total agreement. You can't mention a fake teen's naughty bits, but you sure as hell can help someone kill themselves -- or at least worsen a condition that's bound to cause them psychological and physical trauma even if they do get treatment.

Also, I know they've said they don't allow anything "unlawful," but have they mentioned anything about going after communities promoting drug addiction? I didn't read all the comments to that post (because there were a lot of the, obviously) but I can't recall it being brought up at all.

Online services have been going around and around on this one for years, and it's come down to:

1. It's legal. Horrible for you, but legal.

2. If you kill one community, another pops up somewhere. Might as well keep them where you can see them.

3. The best pro-ana groups act like needle exchanges: Members trade tips on how to do what they're going to do anyway without killing themselves in the process, and there are knowledgeable people around to get people help when they're ready for help.

Pro-ana groups upset me, but there's no way to get rid of them, and it's not like anorexics would stop being anorexic if they didn't have a group.

*cleans up after self*

I don't want to be wanky, but I just can't be accepting of them. It's not all just tips on how to be safe -- it's the "thinspiration" that makes them think they need to be even thinner and, what's worse, it's how to hide it from their friends and family, who could otherwise recognize it and get them help.

I know there's always going to be stuff like this, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather have the problem reduced.

Also, thankfully number two applies to just about everything on the internet, so yay for the not-yet-eighteen Harry Potter pr0n just moving instead of being gone forever.

I'll shut up now.
