The Vulva Superstar PC Revue
[info]bellasmommy links to a [info]vaginapagina mod post about whether or not everyone who owns a vagina isn't grossly butthurt when it's implied that zhe is a woman.

[info]stupid_free disagrees. For 700 comments, and counting....

Choice bits:

[info]jack_jackrum: Some people who have vaginas are not women, ladies, or girls. I don't see how this is hard to understand. Have you been under a rock for the last 50 years?
[info]freezer818: Seems like overdramatic, oversensitive hair-splitting that will cause more drama than it's meant to prevent. But what do I know, I'm just a lowly man. *crawls back under rock*

[info]pettythiefIn the example the poster gives (paraphrasing) "recommend that women get pap-tests", how do you re-write that sentence so as not to offend people who have a cervix but don't call themselves 'a woman'? Can it be done? What are you supposed to say? "People with a cervix"? "Vagina-sapiens"? Is it fair of the cisgendered people to expect everyone to perform lexical gymnastics when they represent a tiny proportion of the populace? Unless of course there's a disproportionate number in that community, in which case it's a whole different ball-game.

...and, with that, I think I've burned out, since this whole post makes my head ache. Let's pick a pronoun and go with it.

The real problem is with a safe space that's so safe you're not allowed to say anything at all.

I hope all the people who're insulted by the implication that having a vagina makes you female are also raging against ladies'/women's toilets.

"Essentially, there's a concern that when VPers start off their posts with something like "hey, girls" or "hey, ladies," it can be alienating to readers who don't identify as girls or as ladies."

Oh no, we can't possibly address a community by the gender of the majority of its members. And how many people would complain about "hey, guys" at the start of a post?

This is VP. How many do you think?

I think that's the main driving force behind the wank - not the mod post itself, but that it's VP doing it. I think once a person/forum gets a certain rep, anything they do or say becomes wank fodder, whether or not said action merits said wank. And once again, I could've used better examples - in this case actual LJ comms (cf_hardcore, booju_mooju, ffrants)

Point taken.

Me personally, the only thing I'm really finding wanky is that there are people who would go "OMGWTF OPRUSHION!" at being addressed as 'guys.' Maybe I just missed the New Age sensitive Wo/Man classes.

..Plus the off-comm reactions. I've really got to learn to proof-read before hitting 'Post Comment.'

After reading an article about a woman who found "guy" becoming a gender neutral word offensive in my Women Studies' class, I'm not surprised anymore at feminist word wank.

I read that article, too, I think- how 'guys' is becoming equal opportunity and dudes is close behind, and somehow this contributes to the invisibility of the female in everyday society using slangpression, which is a word I just made up but the author would probably drool over.

Shay, a wombon.

I don't know what the hell your icon is, but it fills my quotient of violence again the patriarchy for the day... and fan-beating.

You could go with "'Sup, my ninjas?"

But then you run the risk of offending the pirates and pro-pirate members.

And then there'd be the offended Japanophiles going "the plural is ninja, because it's Japanese!" and there'd be flamewars over whether Japanese or English pluralization is appropriate when writing in English and using Japanese loanwords on the internet. Meanwhile, the actual Japanese and/or ninja members wouldn't care.

They'd be the ones that didn't say they were ninja, obviously!

And I now intend to. At every possible opportunity.

/I hope all the people who're insulted by the implication that having a vagina makes you female are also raging against ladies'/women's toilets.//

Well, they probably are, given that one of the drawbacks to not conforming to a strict gender binary is risking having the shit beaten out of you every time you pee in public, in case someone decides you're not peeing in the correct toilet.

Damn those oversensitive transfolk, with their ridiculous desire for physical safety! Pft. They should stop bitching and just learn to hold it.

(Betty, this week is a bad one for my general faith in humanity. I am displeased.)

They definitely are. Right now our gay group on campus is railing for gender neutral washrooms, which I wholeheartedly support.
