Who knew some bank stupid would come to this?
So, over on [info]stupid_free, [info]dwa20 posts about someone who doesn't seem to fathom how a bank account works. But that's not the wank. The wank begins when [info]albino_dinosaur says, "i will never ever ever ever understand using a debit card to make a $1 purchase." Well actually, it's not his/her's fault...it's the response by [info]hey_its_michael that gets things rolling:

"I dislike cash for a multitude of reasons (it's literally filthy, requires me to carry paper declaring a belief in the supernatural, and is inconvenient). I debit whenever I can, but carry cash for those times I cannot".

[info]anomie666 immediately goes on the attack:

"When meta-stupids attack!!

Your radical atheism is one of the reasons you don't carry cash!"

Thus begins a brawl between [info]hey_its_michael and [info]anomie666. The constitution is rammed up the ass sideways repeatedly discussed, the meaning of separation of church and state is argued, and Google is called upon to settle things. Small but tasty, I thought.

Oh religious wank. A while ago the Freakonomics guys wrote a question on their blog asking who buys all these books on religion and why God does or doesn't exist. A billion comments later, they posted again saying apparently a bunch of people.

Re:my thoughts on yaoi money: I use my debit/credit card for almost everything. I hate carrying money. It's so dirty and I can't track my purchasing habits on Wesabe using cash.

It's simple: If I carry cash, I'll immediately spend it on books or ice cream, or something. If I carry a debit card, I will still buy books, but won't be able to buy random food on the street. So the only way to marginally help preserve my bank account from imploding is to not carry cash unless unavoidable.

Oh man, I loved that argument. anomie666 is the same person who insisted that all mental illnesses were not illness, but were, in fact, adaptive behavior. When I asked him how disordered thinking could be considered adaptive re: schizophrenia, he had no answer. He's also well known for loving Ann Coulter. I'm surprised he hasn't shown up here before.

I think he's been featured in the b0st0n wanks we've had, or at least a participant.

And now I'm going to ignore the rest of your comment, because thinking too hard about those statements (by him) will only lead to headdeskery.

See, this is where I'm sort of on the side of the crazy. Yes, debit cards are useful, and prevent me from racking up debt, but...money! If I budget only x dollars for the week, and forbid myself from getting more money out, I learn the value of it, you know? (I used to spend money like it was water.)

I hate that Visa debit card commercial where everyone looks at the guy spending money like he's a dirty pinko.

My impression was that the crazy was anomie666 calling people out for being radical when he is, himself, pretty damn radical. I don't think it really has to do with money at all.

I hate that commercial too. It reminds me of an episode of the Garfield cartoon, Jon goes to the mall to buy a wastebasket and when he tries to pay in cash the clerk freaks out and calls mall security because she thinks he must be crazy since he's not using a credit card.

The nice thing about cash, says the lady who has the most recent Buffy comic and a bunch of vegetables for making salsa and didn't have to go to the grocery store to get them is you can give it to other people to get things for you.

The nice thing about debit cards is you don't have to cary more than twenty bucks or so, and then lose it when you drop your wallet in the parking lot.

Me, I walk the line...

Because a revisionist fundie would never do anything like that.

Huh.. Funny. I've had to answer that Richard III killed his nephews on a history test before when I'm a Ricardian and don't believe that he did but it was multiple choice. I, strangely, didn't start refusing to touch tests or attend history classes.

I've also answered questions on science tests concering evolution when I'm not sure I quite buy all of the science involved (not saying it didn't happen, mind, but some of the assertions on those tests were sketchy at best and downright strawmen at worst)... I didn't decide to flunk the test in protest either.

Does this mean I don't stand up for what I believe, or that I'm practical enough to go, "You believe it. It's better for me to humor you, and in my personal life believe what I personally believe." Don't agree with what money says? Fine. You don't have to use it, really, but taking it as some personal offense on your own system of belief? Yeah. No. You can feel free to scratch out the reference to 'divine providence' in the Declaration of Independence in your personal copy too- but it won't change the fact that it was decided on two hundred years ago. I promise. Humoring other people and letting them have their beliefs, not to mention realizing there's a historical basis for it, will NOT disrupt your life unless you choose to let it when the belief doesn't actually cause harm to you. Choosing never to have a dollar on hand because of it? That does disrupt your life and makes you look kinda silly. Tolerance can, in fact, go both ways. Crazy, I know.

I don't carry cash, but that's just because I never go to an ATM. I think it's quite lovely when I have it.
