Who knew some bank stupid would come to this?
So, over on [info]stupid_free, [info]dwa20 posts about someone who doesn't seem to fathom how a bank account works. But that's not the wank. The wank begins when [info]albino_dinosaur says, "i will never ever ever ever understand using a debit card to make a $1 purchase." Well actually, it's not his/her's fault...it's the response by [info]hey_its_michael that gets things rolling:

"I dislike cash for a multitude of reasons (it's literally filthy, requires me to carry paper declaring a belief in the supernatural, and is inconvenient). I debit whenever I can, but carry cash for those times I cannot".

[info]anomie666 immediately goes on the attack:

"When meta-stupids attack!!

Your radical atheism is one of the reasons you don't carry cash!"

Thus begins a brawl between [info]hey_its_michael and [info]anomie666. The constitution is rammed up the ass sideways repeatedly discussed, the meaning of separation of church and state is argued, and Google is called upon to settle things. Small but tasty, I thought.

See, this is where I'm sort of on the side of the crazy. Yes, debit cards are useful, and prevent me from racking up debt, but...money! If I budget only x dollars for the week, and forbid myself from getting more money out, I learn the value of it, you know? (I used to spend money like it was water.)

I hate that Visa debit card commercial where everyone looks at the guy spending money like he's a dirty pinko.

My impression was that the crazy was anomie666 calling people out for being radical when he is, himself, pretty damn radical. I don't think it really has to do with money at all.

I hate that commercial too. It reminds me of an episode of the Garfield cartoon, Jon goes to the mall to buy a wastebasket and when he tries to pay in cash the clerk freaks out and calls mall security because she thinks he must be crazy since he's not using a credit card.

The whole series of new Visa commercials creep the hell out of me. They've got a vaguely futuristic dystopian feel to them. "Pay with a card, or the order is disturbed!"

Creeps me out too. Especially the one that uses the main song from the movie "Brazil".

Sometimes, I think that the people making commercials must really hate their jobs, because there are lots of commercials out there (like the Visa one) that seems to make you turn away from the product: the sleeping pills which get you stalked by radioactive butterflies, the cellphone that gets you fired, the beef jerky that turns you into a bullying moron and eventually gets you attacked by an apeman...
Or maybe they're just plain stupid.

OOOOOH. I bet if you put the movie in highly contrasted greyscale, it would look great edited into Metropolis! You are so right.

One of them already does that. Everything's all happy and shiny and colorful until the lady stops progress to write a check, then the birds stop singing and everything goes grey while all the other people stare at her until she slinks off in embarrassment after finishing her purchase, then everything becomes happy and colorful again. Creeeeepy.

I think it works differently for everyone. Some people save better if they take out a certain amount of walking-around money, some save better if they only use their debit card so they can track what they spend more easily.

I'll join in the hate. It takes me so much longer at work to process credit cards (when the damn registers work. They're older than me) than to just hand people their change.

I am the opposite! If my wallet is full of money, I feel rich and I spend it all.

If my wallet is full of debit card, I have this sneaking feeling that my account is emptying faster than I thought it was, and I penny-pinch so much it embarrasses *me*.

So I get cash out, spend it all, and then buy nothing the rest of the month.

..the Visa commercials also creep me out.

The irony of that commercial. I work for a bank, in a call center to be exact. They recently set up the registers to accept debit and credit cards, including those new paypass cards. Everyone hates them, because they are so slow it takes longer to pay with a card then with cash.

In my experience, here, it takes always longer to pay by card (well, except for the little old ladies who can't distinguish the coins; we have several coins which look terribly similar), and consequenly, most people don't use cards for small purchases, and lots of stores don't take them. I wonder if there are different payment systems or something, which make paying take so much longer.

Definitely agreeing. Basically, I keep track of what money is actually in my account. Once I have taken $20 cash out, or whatever, I consider it to already be spent. It just varies how long the actual spending takes, and what I get for that money I'm already counting as gone.

And since I already count it as spent, then I really don't have to keep receipts at all, unless it's possible I'll be returning an item. (And since usually all I'm buying is groceries or a quick snack at work, that doesn't happen often.) I find that keeping track of a million paper receipts is incredibly annoying, and I always wound up missing one somewhere and having my own records not agree with the bank's.

Debit/credit, for me, is basically for large purchases that I wouldn't want to carry around enough cash for, hotel reservations, or if I haven't gotten to the bank in like a month and don't have any cash on me whatsoever. Sadly, I had to use debit for a 25 cent Little Debbie cake the other day. That was embarrassing. Or it would have been, if it wasn't me ringing myself up at work on a shift where I was working alone.

I think I'm stupid either way when it comes to using vs not using my debit card. If I keep cash in my wallet it isn't going to last past a week at most, but I have also lost track of how much money I have left in my checking and have become overdrawn due to using my card too much. *facepalm* I just make sure to get a receipt every time I deposit my paycheck and have sworn to never get a credit card if I can help it.

I hate those commercials too. And we don't have those paypass thingies where I work, so it takes the same amount of time paying by cash or by card. The only time someone might hold up a line is if they're paying by check, which can be pretty slow, but I'm not going to care unless there's a super-long line or something. *shrugs*
