Who knew some bank stupid would come to this?
So, over on [info]stupid_free, [info]dwa20 posts about someone who doesn't seem to fathom how a bank account works. But that's not the wank. The wank begins when [info]albino_dinosaur says, "i will never ever ever ever understand using a debit card to make a $1 purchase." Well actually, it's not his/her's fault...it's the response by [info]hey_its_michael that gets things rolling:

"I dislike cash for a multitude of reasons (it's literally filthy, requires me to carry paper declaring a belief in the supernatural, and is inconvenient). I debit whenever I can, but carry cash for those times I cannot".

[info]anomie666 immediately goes on the attack:

"When meta-stupids attack!!

Your radical atheism is one of the reasons you don't carry cash!"

Thus begins a brawl between [info]hey_its_michael and [info]anomie666. The constitution is rammed up the ass sideways repeatedly discussed, the meaning of separation of church and state is argued, and Google is called upon to settle things. Small but tasty, I thought.

Also, I love how whatshitsname666 doesn't even seem to know what Separation of Church and State means :D

I think it refers to the fact that US money has 'In God We Trust' inscribed on it.

I clearly used to surf on CAPalert for too long. I immediately thought it was the "OMG! Pyramid with the eye is a masonic symbol! AWAY, SATAN AND YOUR EVIL MONEY!" but ... given that they're bringing up atheism, that makes a lot more sense.

Or maybe it's just the weirdest part of the dollar bill. ("In nonsense is strength." yo)

At first I thought it was some kind of strange reference to the fact that paper money technically 'represents' a particular amount of gold, but then what would that make debit cards, which represent cash which represents something else? Like, a meta-figment?

Which part? What they said or why I found it kind amusing.

Why they said it.

Because they think cash should not have an expression of belief printed on it.

And I didn't know that before and find it pretty damn weird myself.

According to Wiki, it showed up on the coins back in 1864 supposedly because of increased religious sentiment during our Civil War, paper bills in 1957 and was legislated as the national motto in 1956. I had no idea it showed up on coins that early. I thought it was all part of the OMGCOMMUNISTS! reaction in the 50's where they also added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Wait a minute. I thought E Pluribus Unum was our national motto.

According to the article I found, it was one of the unofficial mottos but we never got around to creating an official one til the '50's and ended up with "In God We Trust".

Oh, well then it's because it says "In God we trust" in American money :)

As long as I can continue to exchange it for booze, books and porn, my money could be ten feet tall with a blinking picture of Carrot Top on it and I would still continue to cherish it. *hugs her cash*

True, but I'd be much more inclined to use debit card if I had to look at Carrot Top all day otherwise. He's scary. ;_;

Ten feet tall? You wouldn't get much in your pocket. Then again, if would curb a heavy spending habit. I think I've got the answer to shopaholism now - giant-ass money. That screams when you spend it. "Nooooo! Don't spend meeeee!

To be fair, that kind of weirds me out, too. But I figure that's why God made Sharpies and nail files.

...no pun intended.
