Who knew some bank stupid would come to this?
So, over on [info]stupid_free, [info]dwa20 posts about someone who doesn't seem to fathom how a bank account works. But that's not the wank. The wank begins when [info]albino_dinosaur says, "i will never ever ever ever understand using a debit card to make a $1 purchase." Well actually, it's not his/her's fault...it's the response by [info]hey_its_michael that gets things rolling:

"I dislike cash for a multitude of reasons (it's literally filthy, requires me to carry paper declaring a belief in the supernatural, and is inconvenient). I debit whenever I can, but carry cash for those times I cannot".

[info]anomie666 immediately goes on the attack:

"When meta-stupids attack!!

Your radical atheism is one of the reasons you don't carry cash!"

Thus begins a brawl between [info]hey_its_michael and [info]anomie666. The constitution is rammed up the ass sideways repeatedly discussed, the meaning of separation of church and state is argued, and Google is called upon to settle things. Small but tasty, I thought.

The nice thing about cash, says the lady who has the most recent Buffy comic and a bunch of vegetables for making salsa and didn't have to go to the grocery store to get them is you can give it to other people to get things for you.

The nice thing about debit cards is you don't have to cary more than twenty bucks or so, and then lose it when you drop your wallet in the parking lot.

Me, I walk the line...

It is, indeed, the staff of life. Or the stuff of the best burritos.

The peppers are starting to set, so we have the expensive bits for free (excluding buying the plants to begin with, fertilizer, and labor, but who's counting?).

YOu can give people your debit cards, too, provided a) the store has the patrons swipe & pin without looking at the cards and b) you're willing to give the person your PIN. I grocery shop with my dad's check card all the time because sometimes there's just no cash on hand.

Ick, no! I trust my kids with my life and honor and house key and jewelry, but nobody in my family knows anyone else's PIN.

We don't share toothbrushes or underwear, either.

And that is how one of my university housemates ended up losing £300 - because she let her lower-than-slime boyfriend know what her PIN was. It was when she found out he'd taken the £300 that she finally wised up just how skeevy he was. (Not like the fact that he'd tried to hit on me, had no job and mooched off her weren't big enough clues...)

Ew. Yeah. Hence the "willing to give them your PIN" bit - the card Dad lets me use is tied to the household account, which my parents pay a lot of attention to. It would be pretty stupid of me to try to steal from it.

On the one hand, I have a frequent-flyer program on my debit card. On the other hand, I just plain feel weird using a debit card for any amount higher than five dollars, because that used to be a real pain in the butt for the retailer. Ergo, I use both.

I find that frequent small debit card purchases are like having a slow leak in my bank account, so I get $40 and a machine balance every Sunday and use a debit card or checks (my health care provider has a nasty habit of doing stupid things with cash or card payments and then billing us for copays and prescriptions we've already paid for) for big purchase.

Except for really big purchases, where reality demands I use a credit card; I bought a new iMac yesterday, and am still in a cold sweat over my VISA balance.
