[info]thexphial posts in [info]bad_service that she was charged $4 for sitting at a table in a tex-mex restaurant and not eating. Her family finds this unreasonable, because she had just had her tonsils out and couldn't have eaten the free chips, etc. Yes, the policy is on the menu, but the type is tiny. Also, she thinks they wouldn't waive the fee because she's fat. Cue the special.

FREE MEANS FREE ZOMG
Don't blame the waitress
Not everyone hates fat people
It's definately because you're fat (Further down this thread, there is something about her having posted wankiness in the past)
You are imature and I want to ground you
Don't waste food

And don't share your thoughts on fat people or food wasting in the comments.

ETA: I'm having to turn off notifications for this post with the amount of serious teal dear now that OP has shown up and responded to everything ever.

I think it's wanky of a restaurant to charge a non-eating person when they're in the company of people who do order food.

Dude...that like a hooker charging for both guys, when one of them just wants to watch. :/
Don't you know that entitlement isn't free.

More like a hooker charging for both guys while one of them waits in the car.

Don't they usually do business in cars? I'm so out of touch. >.>

Is that what happened? I didn't check the original post, so for some reason, I thought she was by herself. In that case, yeah, that kinda sucks, because it's not like she was wasting a table.

(The issue is that in tex-mex restaurants, they give you a lot of free shit for the table and often charge people who don't order. She's complaining because she couldn't eat the stuff they wanted to charge her for. I'm not justifying it, but a lot of restaurants do that.)

But it's still sort of a good argument. If she didn't eat anything at all, why is she the one having to pay? Why not just split the charge and tack it onto the tickets of the people who did eat chips?

I wouldn't normally care, but I was in so much pain (day 7 & 8 suck, btw) and the very idea of eating a chip or salsa was completely out of the question. I understand the fee, but I was pissy because I really WANTED those things and couldn't eat them, so being basically accused of lying by the waitress when my mom said I had eaten nothing really got on my very last nerve.

I wouldn't say it's wrong, but it would be way LESS wrong if they'd post their policy right out where people could see it. Like before they sat down. Hiding it in little type on the menu is pretty lousy.

It makes sense; if the restaurant puts out lots of free chips, etc. on the table, they might have a problem with, for example, a party of five coming in, ordering two meals, and filling up on chips.

True, and in that situation I'd understand it. But when it's one person, it's kinda... wanky.

Couldn't the restaurant, you know, not put free things on the table? Problem solved!

This is actually somewhat timely, for me. In one of those advice columns (you know, Dear Abby or something) last week, a waitress posted about large groups of people that would come in during peak dinner hours just to hold their committee meetings, without ordering anything. The advice was to add a minimum charge. So my first thought was that this particular place had similar problems in the past.

Indeed, and that's just rude of the people coming over to hold tables, but I was talking about charging a single person in the company of people who do order.
