stinky dolls are srs bsns
[info]bad_dolly_deals is a livejournal community where doll collectors (mostly blythes, but also some pullips and BJDs) post to report on transactions that have gone wrong. [info]blythe_love71, a self-admitted sock account, posts a warning that a formerly reported seller is back after a hiatus, and seems to be liquidating most of her blythe collection.

full text of the post is under the cut. to sum up: she smokes like a chimney! i tried to bury my doll in kitty litter to get rid of the cigarette stench but it's still there! i'm a sock so her posse doesn't come after me!

I notice that Queenie (on Flickr) /ShellB is selling most of her Blythes again. So this is a reminder before any of you consider purchasing dolls from her to remember she is a smoker, and I presume a VERY heavy one judging my the stench that comes fom the dolls. And don't forget she is less than honest about shipping and things. She is not taking paypal this time, which is something. BUT I think that is more so that she isn't bound by Paypals terms, so if anyone complained she wouldn't have to give a refund.

I bought from her last time and I was so upset about the smell that I cried, the doll itself is STILL in a ziplock bag with kittylitter to try and take the smell away, but it's still bad :( I keep thinking about all those poor smelly dollies, those beautiful Kenners especially.

I wish to remain anonymous at the moment as I don't want the back lash of her 'friends'. I didn't come forward last time as I felt mortified by how stupid I had been.

PLEASE THINK SERIOUSLY BEFORE YOU BUY FROM HER!!

a couple people comment to relate their past dealings with her (summed up as "yeah, the doll stank but the transaction went ok otherwise") and then the fun begins. at least two suspected sockpuppets chime in to agree with each other / deny being socks / spell stuff wrong / call the comm members bitter bitches and snoopyhags defend the stinky seller until, inevitably, the seller pops in herself:

As for the rest.. if these same people that stalk BDD for the oppertunity to bitch and debase a person are the self same people as i believe you to be then thats fantastic..you nasty bitches play nicely with each other...or should i say continue to play nicely with each other..but watch your backs because none of you have any common decency between you....not al of you have posted yet...but there WILL be those fammiliar names here soon i just know it..go on make my day..push the reply count beyond my last score of i think 42????

small so far but will surely grow -- quite a few people had problems with her in the past. (and also, it's my first report, eek.)

Kitty litter is one of those things that is frequently suggested to use to get cigarette smoke odor out of things it should not be in. I've never had any luck with it myself, but.

The bags of volcanic rocks work well if you seal things up together and give them several months.

I've had some bad experiences with used books.

This is how you learn important life lessons like, "Ask the ebay seller whether the books have an odor that can be detected from 500 feet away."

bad experiences with used books

I hear where you're coming from on that, hence the Kitty Litter Experience.

I'd post paperbackswap.com smoke wank, but their forums are members-only.

I've used paperbackswap to great effect, but I avoid the forums.

I'll have to remember that. My mother smokes so much (and never, ever opens windows) that anything from her house has a mandatory 14-day outdoor quarantine period, and sometimes even that doesn't work.

(The book thing that pisses me off is when people smoke all over perfectly good library books. Haaaaaaate!)

To be fair, if one smokes all over everything else in one's house, it's hard not to get it on the library books too.

-Hypatia Mouse, who doesn't smoke and hates people who deface library books, but still.

Hmm...I may have to do that with a few things after we move. Any specific kind or just Kitty litter in general?

Ohh, God. I work at a great big Pittsburgh library, and emptying the book drops the other day was amazing. Someone had been indulging in...smoking of a slightly narcotic nature, one could say, around their rather large stack of art history books. Got the drop cart into our nice big basement sorting space with its four fans and twenty-foot ceiling and great ventilation, and everyone was choking.

Library books that can get you high. This should be on posters everywhere - there would be lines around the block, full of kids just dying to 'read'.

I used to sell out of print books- we kept a trash can filled with a huge amount of kitty litter and bags of aquarium charcoal for the ones we thought would still be valuable for their information or if a customer requested a de-stinking of a noted smelly book- it worked pretty well. You've just got to be very careful to load the kitty litter and NOT the charcoal in between the pages and kinda position it so that they won't get bent or damaged- we'd do one book at a time, and fan them as little as possible. We did this with an elephant folio once that reeked of smoke and it worked really well.

The problem with just dunking the book in without opening it is that the papers will still have the smell. And I wouldn't try it with something that creaks or cracks when you open it. I'm also talking about academic books or maybe a kid's book without a lot of pages... something that's more for informational or sentimental value than collector's copies.

It is possible for the kitty litter to imprint on the pages or possibly dry out the glue holding the binding or even damage the binding fabric, so it's not a perfect solution. A day or two in the fresh air propped in a v-shape and turning the pages every hour or so works wonders, too, but it's pretty labour intensive and you still could get some page damage if a gust turns a page inward.

If you're really, really into used books try http://bookdeodorizer.blogspot.com/- I've heard it works great on a couple listservs, never tried it myself though.

I can top you all. I worked at my small town's public library while I was in high school. One afternoon, I emptied the book-drop like I always did and began to remove the books. This was fine, until I encountered the book covered in CAT URINE. Which, of course, had to be removed from the drop, handled so we could get the barcode number from it, and then discarded as quickly as possible. I think we had to air the other books out, too.

Ew. I've a cat who has a habit of peeing on my bed (just mine, no one else's) or the sofa when under stress, and a manga of mine was ruined when I left it on the sofa and we brought a new cat into the house.

But I threw it away, because, well, EW.

Interesting. I would have thought that dry kitty litter wouldn't do much good if the smell has already permeated the plastic/vinyl of the doll. I guess if you were to seal it up in a reasonably air tight container for quite a while?

(Of course, as a BJD person my first response was "why not try just taking it apart and cleaning it real good?" but then I remembered that that wouldn't really be helpful advice to a Blythe owner. ;) )

Oh good, I read the stuff outside the cut, and was immediately seized by a desire to go to the doll forums and ask if they'd tried baking soda. Do you know if that works?

According to someone who had to deal with the skankiest American Girl doll (part vinyl, part cloth, part tastey nuget filling!): yes, it does. She put the emptied out doll into a trash bag with lots of baking soda and left it for a few days. I don't think it was perfect, but after some airings and general waiting, the smell did disperse.

I seem to recall someone successfully using baking soda to treat a resin BJD that had yellowed. I might be misremembering though.

Stuffing it in a bag with dryer sheets and some baking soda works a trick in my experience. I also use denture cleaning tablets to remove stains from doll clothing and other delicate fabric items.
