stinky dolls are srs bsns
[info]bad_dolly_deals is a livejournal community where doll collectors (mostly blythes, but also some pullips and BJDs) post to report on transactions that have gone wrong. [info]blythe_love71, a self-admitted sock account, posts a warning that a formerly reported seller is back after a hiatus, and seems to be liquidating most of her blythe collection.

full text of the post is under the cut. to sum up: she smokes like a chimney! i tried to bury my doll in kitty litter to get rid of the cigarette stench but it's still there! i'm a sock so her posse doesn't come after me!

I notice that Queenie (on Flickr) /ShellB is selling most of her Blythes again. So this is a reminder before any of you consider purchasing dolls from her to remember she is a smoker, and I presume a VERY heavy one judging my the stench that comes fom the dolls. And don't forget she is less than honest about shipping and things. She is not taking paypal this time, which is something. BUT I think that is more so that she isn't bound by Paypals terms, so if anyone complained she wouldn't have to give a refund.

I bought from her last time and I was so upset about the smell that I cried, the doll itself is STILL in a ziplock bag with kittylitter to try and take the smell away, but it's still bad :( I keep thinking about all those poor smelly dollies, those beautiful Kenners especially.

I wish to remain anonymous at the moment as I don't want the back lash of her 'friends'. I didn't come forward last time as I felt mortified by how stupid I had been.

PLEASE THINK SERIOUSLY BEFORE YOU BUY FROM HER!!

a couple people comment to relate their past dealings with her (summed up as "yeah, the doll stank but the transaction went ok otherwise") and then the fun begins. at least two suspected sockpuppets chime in to agree with each other / deny being socks / spell stuff wrong / call the comm members bitter bitches and snoopyhags defend the stinky seller until, inevitably, the seller pops in herself:

As for the rest.. if these same people that stalk BDD for the oppertunity to bitch and debase a person are the self same people as i believe you to be then thats fantastic..you nasty bitches play nicely with each other...or should i say continue to play nicely with each other..but watch your backs because none of you have any common decency between you....not al of you have posted yet...but there WILL be those fammiliar names here soon i just know it..go on make my day..push the reply count beyond my last score of i think 42????

small so far but will surely grow -- quite a few people had problems with her in the past. (and also, it's my first report, eek.)

Oh good, I read the stuff outside the cut, and was immediately seized by a desire to go to the doll forums and ask if they'd tried baking soda. Do you know if that works?

According to someone who had to deal with the skankiest American Girl doll (part vinyl, part cloth, part tastey nuget filling!): yes, it does. She put the emptied out doll into a trash bag with lots of baking soda and left it for a few days. I don't think it was perfect, but after some airings and general waiting, the smell did disperse.

Also, a dryer sheet put in a ziplock bag with a doll or its clothes for several days helps

Baking soda is magical! You can use it with a bit of water to get dirt off vinyl and plastic, too, and it shines your stainless steel or chrome appliances. Oooh, ahhh, etc.

i actually just bought some to use for general household cleaning. i guess you can clean anything with some combination of baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, and water. i'm trying to make things easier for myself (i am a delicate flower chemically sensitive), my cat, and the environment, woo hoo.

Just don't, you know, mix up the vinegar and water when you're about to use the baking soda. Unless you want it to go FWOOOM! and impress the cat with your volcano making skillz.

but it can be a magical drain-unclogging volcano, though, right?

White vinegar + water = all the floor detergent you will ever need. And it makes a pleasant, salad-like smell.

Emptied-out doll?

I think maybe I'm not picturing these dolls correctly. What was it stuffed with when she got it?

Judging from the dolls' dead, dead eyes, I'm guessing--children's souls?

The cloth part is stuffed with stuffing stuff. I'm not sure what it's called. This picture is of three dolls without their stuffing, and their heads removed (the heads can be detached for cleaning! awesome!)

Basically what Bean did is she took the stuffing out of the doll and threw it away. She put the emptied doll into a trash bag with a box or two of baking soda, and then when the smell was mostly gone, she put in new stuffing.

OK, yeah. Thank you, now I understand. I had a doll like that as a kid. Her name was Lily. But I wasn't a collector, more, you know, a kid.

Well, one collector is infamous for calling her dolls "chocolate morsels."

I seem to recall someone successfully using baking soda to treat a resin BJD that had yellowed. I might be misremembering though.

So, every so often, I see an icon on FW that thrills me to my toes and makes me grin like a fool. I tend to want to say something, but "icon love!" gets old, and anonymous comments are usually turned off anyway.
The thing is, they're always your icons.
So, uh, since anonymous comments are on and I'm full of vodka, consider this a confession of severe icon crushage. It began with Black Books, but Stephen Fry really sort of clinched it.

Hypatia Mouse, you just made my whole week! Here, have another Stephen icon. BTW, both my Black Books and QI icons were made by erin_icons on lj. I just took a whole bunch. :)

Would you like a JF? Drop me a line (my email is in my profile) and I can request one for you (I think. I haven't tried it since becoming a paid user, but it looks fairly straight forward).

The world can never have enough Stephen Fry icons :p

Or enough Stephen Fry for that matter.

Stuffing it in a bag with dryer sheets and some baking soda works a trick in my experience. I also use denture cleaning tablets to remove stains from doll clothing and other delicate fabric items.
