You got your racism in my coffee! You got your coffee in my racism!
[info]evilgrins delivered a list of bogus food terms to the [info]food_porn community which was kind of amusing but the last definition...

arab coffee: Thick, black, bitter coffee, traditionally served in tiny cups at gunpoint.

...really inspired some, uh, debate.

[info]likeawoman is accused of being likeatroll for staying determinedly offended by everyone but [info]obfuscate brings up Godwins first. "If you replace "arab coffee" with "matzo" is it an insult to Jews? "Haggis" (I hear it's good, but what the hell.. who came up with that?), and it's a comment on how violent those damn Scots are? Put "borscht" in there and you're pissing on the Slavs? "Liverwurst" would then, I suppose, mean that all Germans are violent Nazis."

Nobody likes a laugh more than me. Except for my wife. And Mrs. Johnson.

Define 'Offensive.'

Am I the only one that likes Turkish Coffee?

Why the random-ass definitions anyway?

As a White Canadian Female, let me clarify things for ya'll.

See, this is why I drink tea.

That's not what I meant but maybe it came across that way. What I meant was that she has excellent points but when she is so angry at everything but comes from a place that is about as non-confrontational and white-bread as you can get I have pause to wonder if she's just looking for something to fight about.

Ok, good to see I misread that, my point is that one of the MANY commonly used ways to suppress discussions of race is to point out that it's a white person complaining. No offense, your comment just reminded me of that and seeing as the OP is pretty much a 'Stupid White Folks BINGO' card just waiting to be filled out, I reacted.

It's all good. I can see how what I said would have done that. I actually thought of that after I posted and was all, "D'oh!". And WORD to your thoughts on the OP.

The irony is that likeawoman has a few bingo cards on her userinfo.

I have pause to wonder if she's just looking for something to fight about.

I wondered that as well. On her profile she claims her sockpuppet friend calls her a "certified pwnologist" which makes me think she cares more about the fight itself than what she's fighting about. That's not to say she doesn't have some good points in this. I just doubt her sincerity.

Exactly! You found the word that I couldn't seem to think of- sincerity. She reeks, to me at least, of someone who is angry merely for looks but actually doesn't believe in what she is saying nearly as much as she wants people to think. The fact that she went to all these schools in Michigan where I'm pretty sure the diversity is close to nil makes me wonder if she even has any knowledge of which she speaks outside of reading it in a book.

I recognize her from debunkingwhite over on lj, so I do know she has an active interest in being anti-racist, I don't know if she's really over-reacting though, considering all the privilege in that thread.

Hmm, maybe she does have some knowledge of the topic she speaks on but still... she just strikes a sour note with me.

Not to say that whole thread and post doesn't make me want to vomit with all the delusions people are coming up with. Guns and Arabs? Racist sounding? NEVER!

I don't think I've ever seen her username before so she may be sincere. And I do think that the OP's wording was at best ignorant and at worst deliberately provocative. She just hit the same "angry just to be angry" alarm that Ginmar also sets off.
