If I knew you were wanking, I'd have iced a cake
Over in [info]hp_britglish, schemingreader makes the mistake of asking what the stuff you spread on top of a cake is called. Hint: It ain't "frosting".

[info]oncelikeshari thinks that butter icing is evil and wrong and should be stopped, or that it doesn't exist. I'm not entirely sure.

Either way, I want cake. :(

Short, but sweet.

The only thing this wank is missing is Glemph, Nort, and their Buck Cake recipe book.

This wank made me want cake.

Luckily, my 21st birthday has supplied me with plenty for the week. <3 (But should I eat the frosting or the icing first?)

Man, I just bought groceries today and now I totally want just a tub of Betty Crocker chocolate frosting to eat all by myself.

But on Thursday I get Tastykakes, so maybe I can hold out.

It's times like this I'm thankful that I have a salt tooth rather than a sweet tooth. Otherwise this thread would make me drive to the 24-hour grocery to clean out their bakery case.

also oh god, I am now in GRAVE DANGER of going to the 24 hour grocery and buying the ingredients for Delicious White Trash Dessert Product, which is package-mix brownies covered whilst still hot with marshmallow fluff, then set to solidify a bit while you mix powdered sugar with melted butter and vanilla and cocoa and a liiiittle bit of milk for frosting. A single inch-square piece has been known to fell a college freshman boy where he stands. I WANT IT SO BAD.

You know what's the best cake in the history of ever? Poke holes in ordinary yellow cake and pour orange juice on it until it no longer soaks in. Make the icing entirely out of sugar and strawberries that have been mashed into goo.

And I don't have the time to make it because of papers. >:(

... There are two professional care decorators in my family and they don't make butter icing unless somebody asks for it to be used as a filling and most people ask for jam instead.

Maybe it's a working class thing.

Ah, so only the uber-pretentious eat cake with a spoon or fork? Good to know that I live in a country when everyone, even the lowest of the working class, is pretentious then, because OMG! we all eat cake with a spoon or fork, NOT holding it in our hands!

(Then again we only call it cake if it has icing on it, or there's filling. Otherwise it's a soft cookie.)

I know I'm preaching to the converted here, but as further proof that buttercream is not just a working class thing, here is Vincent Price's (not exactly traditional) personal recipe for "Chocolate Butter Cream". Although he might not count to her, since he was a US citizen.

"1. Into container of an electric blender put: 1 package (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate pieces and 1/3 cup hot coffee. Cover and blend on high speed for 20 seconds, or until smooth.

2. Add: 4 egg yolks and 2 tablespoons dark rum or brandy. Cover and turn motor on high speed. With motor on, uncover, and drop in piece by piece: 1 stick slightly softened butter. If vortex ceases to form, break surface of mixture with a rubber spatula, being careful not to dip too deeply into the blades. In very warm weather it may be necessary to chill the cream before spreading over a cake. This is enough cream to fill and frost an 8-inch layer cake."

Written before food processors were invented, so go ahead and use on of those instead of a blender if you want.

See, now, all things considered? I prefer pie. Not that I don't like a good cake, but I like making pie. I think it's my unhealthy fascination with pastry dough.

Here is my favorite pie recipe, which has been known to bring even those who claim they don't like apple pie to their knees.
