And now for something completely different. (Else, why you shouldn't write wank reports at 1:47 am)
The theater of war: Slashdot a veritable breeding ground for spitting hate, pseudo-intellectual discussion, and whining about how generally, things suck.

Cue a post about the Washington State Linux User Group's little idea of a Nerd Auction, a certainly lovely idea, and apparently one that was come up with in the shower by the group leader: Ben.

All is fine and well, until anonymous shows up.

Apparently for somebody out there, the accusations of the anonymous, (and possibly the not so anonymous burntpenguin) hit a bit close to home, and are srs buisness.

And then for bonus points, the ex-fiancee of Ben the leader shows up.

No godwin's law invoked yet though. I'm pretty sure it's there somewhere.

I blame the proximity to Idaho.

(Or I would, if I hadn't grown up around Buckley/Enumclaw/Puyallup, and thus am well aware that Washington's oh-so-cool public image is all a giant facade covering its redneck reality. God, I can't wait to move back.)

I really shouldn't say anything, since Yelm wasn't exactly the cosmopolitan and sophisticated place it is now, back when I was a child, but, yeah, the upper Puyallup Valley is pretty much Lynden South.

That said, as for WSU being a school for nerds: Paul Allen went there. And was a frat rat.

Why does the fact that Paul Allen went to WSU not surprise me in the least. He seems like the kind of nerd who desperately wants to regain his glory days when everyone liked him and thought he was cool.

Mind you, I got to Evergreen where there are no frats and most people are nerdy in some way. Although a frat group did try to get one campus last year.

Hey, I went to Evergreen first, and then to WSU (in Anthropology, a department which was like a little bubble of not-Pullman). This was back when a TESC degree was looked at with grave suspicion, and I ook a second BA to try to wiggle in to grad school. Except two years in Pullman was enough to show me that more than that would kill me dead.

I don't think Paul Allen was ever cool; I suspect his life now is still an attempt to buy popularity; it doesn't seem to be working.

I always forget that TESC degrees used to not be seen in a more positive light. Most of the people I've talked to about grad school at the UW are like "Hey, as long as you don't fuck up majorly you'll be able to get in with a TESC degree". The only people who'll look at my degree with suspicion will be my mom's side of the family and they already wonder if I'm not actually getting my degree in Japanese History and Language but in Pagan Lesbianism and Anarchy.

His attempts to buy popularity tend to coincide with his land-buying so I'm not surprised Paul Allen still isn't popular. Espeically since he keeps insisting that the state/city government raise taxes to pay for his little ventures when he can totally pay for them himself.

Things have changed over the past (hrmmahrrm) years, especially that. There was zero grad school performance history to go on when I was applying, and, to make things worse, it was harder to get into graduate school in-state than out, for reasons having to do with institutional conflicts (most of the founding faculty was from out of state, for one very big thing).

But coming off Evergreen, 300-500 level classes at WSU were pretty easy; not nearly the amount of writing to do, for one thing.

I can't wait to get in to the Jackson School at the UW because I won't have to write as much as I do now. Three separate notebooks for book notes that have to be turned in every three weeks, a giant research project on top of weekly response papers and work.

There are still some insitutional conflicts from what I've heard but it's much easier to get into grad school instate now. Although I would like to go to the University of Hawaii-Manoa for grad school but it's too expensive.
