Go off in the corner with your roast beef sandwich, while we build a better World.
Meanie cow-raping school district fires bold rebel for secretly teaching veganism in art class, instead of, um, art.

The former teacher, Dave Warwak, leaves no news article combox untouched in his quest, under the name inslidedotcom.

"teach them how Artists shape and guide morals in society With this knowledge, they can deal with the real world Use their art to create positive change Live longer Heal the earth I model what I teach I have been railroaded Posts removed You celebrate I appeal You pay Meat and Dairy laughs I cry"

Poetry.

And as his combox name might suggest, he has a website.

Yes, this is the man I want to teach MY children about art.

Edit: I turned off comment notification (ow, my inbox) so if anyone has any links to this guy wanking elsewhere (since he's wanked in two news articles at least, I'm sure there's more and will be more) please drop a comment in [info]joye's journal and I'll edit the post. Thanks.

Same way my choir teacher got hired?

Where I went to school, if you wanted to be a teacher and could convince them to hire you without a degree or teacher's certificate, you signed a legally binding contract or some such that said you would get your certification within the next 5 years or they'd fire you.

That's how he got hired. He was a Baptist minister. He was also a jerk. I was supposed to have learned to read music by the end of my Senior Year. I couldn't tell you the difference between a C-sharp and a B-natural and still can't, three years later.

In some places, any dork with an impressive resume can be a teacher. No offense to any educators in the room.

I'd say that's why the one and only decent part of No Child Left Behind is its insistence on highly qualified teachers -- aka actual educators.

The trouble is...He got his job AFTER NCLB.

Given the "ministers are the voice of Gawd" attitude so popular among fans of NCLB, I can't say I'm entirely surprised.

Don't look at me. I like to set fire to Chick Tracts on Halloween, especially the ones that beg for integration of church and state.

I tutor teachers who are having trouble passing the state tests mandated by NCLB. It's not as effective a weeding-out process as you want to think it is.

oh no I've taken those tests. I'm not impressed with that part of it. I think I might just have too much faith :,(

A bit OT, but I think even the highly qualified teachers bit is a clusterfuck. IMO majoring in Political Science or History qualifies one to teach social studies, but you can't do that now without an additional endorsement. Argh.

And sometimes they fire the good teachers because they hadn't gotten their certification fast enough. *mourns Latin 2 teacher*

Yes, but those are the ones we bother to mourn. For me, it was the principal who was forced to resign when she came out. *seethe*

Goddamnit, and here I am facing odds of 1 in 10 to get into the teaching program at my school. :(

That is actually a common practice in American school systems, though the results are not always that stupid. Did he at least show you how to love Jesus or did you just learn nothing at all?

If anything, it took me three years to want to set foot into a church that wasn't a DarkoverCon Conference Room. At least, at Darkover I was allowed to sing the Hallelujah Chorus. HE banned it because HE was bored with it! Still bitter about that one.

I wanted to beat him with a music stand a couple times. But like the Bible, it's not a to--I mean, weapon.
