How about the fine example of what NOT to do when you're a teacher provided by my former professor who was indicted on 33 counts of mail fraud for using students’ SSNs? He got them off of the enrollment lists (the uni used SSNs as ID numbers at the time) and then obtained new social security cards, credit cards, and birth certificates using those numbers. When he was caught he claimed he was doing it as a wakeup call to the young people of the world and was merely showing them how easy identity theft really is and why weren't any of them greatful for all the effort he put into teaching them about real life?!? He got shipped off to jail and the uni changed to real randomized ID numbers the next quarter.

Yeah! Those silly kids, how foolish were they in entrusting their identifying information to their schools... um... in allowing their parents to entrust their identifying information to their schools... um... in allowing their parents to conform to legal requirements of providing identifying information to their schools...

Maybe this would serve as a wake-up call for the school not to use SSNs as identifying numbers?
