Never withhold a herpes infection from sex partner
Holy cripes, you guys. Did you know Drew has herpes?

Right now Drew, whoever the hell he is, is the main feature on STD All-Stars, a blog with the aim of warning us away from people who are infected - including the blogger herself, who has just contracted herpes (but behaves as though she's in the final stages of syphilis).

Found this via Jezebel (tagged under 'sore subjects, har har), who got it via Gawker.

There is so much crap going on (especially in the comments of the blog itself) that I don't even know where to begin. People demand that the blogger post her pics too, people hate on hipsters, gays hate on women, lesbians hate on gays that hate on women, people hate on condoms, people hate on people who hate condoms, people hate on skanks, skanks hate on Myspace, people hate on ignorance, people insist on remaining ignorant, I didn't even finish reading all the comments.

Someone needs a nice big slice of this, if you ask me.

The splooge flies, but beware - it may or may not be infected. Even when wanking, you should maybe use a condom.

ETA: Metafilter is also down with this. Uh, not down as in "down with herpes," but down as in- eh, fuck it.

Herpes. The coming scourge... except that the majority of people out there probably have it and don't even know it.

Yeah, doesn't it happen when you're run down? I get mouth ulcers before my periods and that was way before I snogged anyone. Yet I've kissed heaps of people and none of them had ulcery mouths afterwards.

Just so you know - if what you have are cold sores (HSV1) then it is communicable. Many people get it as kids from relatives, sharing cups/silverware/etc, but it's still a virus.

Yup. I lucked out big as a kid - my mom has it and, despite the care she took not to kiss us directly or share anything when she had cold sores, my sister got it, but I didn't. This always makes me smug happy.

No, it's not cold sores.

The ones inside your mouth (canker sores, whatever) aren't herpes simplex. The ones around your lips are (usually HSV I, which tends to be milder than HSV II). They're communicable from about a day before they appear until they've crusted over completely, but nearly everybody has been exposed to it anyway. (Technically there are something like 6-8 Human Herpes Simplex Viruses, but 3-8 generally don't cause symptoms.)

You're right about HSV 1 and 2, and types 6 and 7 generally aren't too vicious, but HSV-3 is the virus that causes chickenpox (and shingles), 4 is the Epstein-Barr virus, 5 is cytomegalovirus (CMV), and 8 is responsible for Kaposi's sarcoma, all of which can be very bad news if your immune system is at all out of whack.

Argh, yeah, I knew I was getting something wrong - I know those diseses are all related, but I always forget if they're actual HHSVs or just very similar.

And also, if exposed earily enough in life, varicella and EBV, at least, cause only minor symptoms (though varicella can of course recurr as shingles, which is painful but usually not awful if your immune system is alright, and EBV contracted later causes mono).
