Bad Service wanks about welfare and made-up statistics
[info]ever_abstract makes a post to [info]bad_service about a trip to the grocery store involving an incredibly obnoxious cashier-manager duo who give her a hard time about WIC.

This prompts [info]starliteunicorn to tell the community that she thinks welfare is absolutely ridiculous. She goes on to inform us all:

I'm all for getting rid of it entirely. People used to help each OTHER out, instead of begging the government. And it bothers me. A lot. I don't get paid to just exsist-I have to work. I know some people CAN'T get jobs... but it seems extrodinarily unfair. Too many people leech off the welfare system without even ATTEMPTING to find work or get themselves to a better position. The stereotype of the drug addict mother to 6 different kids all with different daddies is true for about 65% of people coming through the various types of welfare (taken from a friend who does, indeed, work in a WIC office).

And it just snowballs from there.

Someone slept through history class.

There's a set of adverts on my local underground station here in London, 'Come to Selfridges for a Dickensian Christmas' which always makes me go "Wuh?"

I know what they mean, but I can't help thinking that those would be the days of peoole, including children, starving on the streets, workhouses, areas of London known as thieves kitchens, match girls spitting up bits of bones from their jaws, and Seven Dials being the most notorious rookery in the country. I think I'd keep my modern Christmas, thanks very much Selfridges.

Aside from specific people who were Inspiring Tales of Happiness, being in a Dickens novel kinda sucks.

and as I recall, even the Inspiring Tales of Happiness had sucky crap happen to them before they became Inspiring Tales of Happiness.

Just being in a Dickens novel sucks.

I'll keep my modern cookie-baking present-wrapping holiday season and world, thanks!

Pretty much., yeah. Shopping is possibly shallow, but warm socks aren't something to sneeze at.

It's more like, "Come to Selfridges to pay an assload to look like you came from a Dickens novel. Oh, and an 80s music video."
