Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you ... the first NaNoWriMo wank of the year!

If you've been to the boards since October, you'll know they've been slow, and that the search function has had to be disabled on and off several times to deal with the load. if you've been around for previous Octobers, you know this is pretty much par for the course whenever that year's boards go up and registration opens -- the site gets flooded, things slow down, the NaNo techies whack things with sticks until things settle down to normality somewhere in the first week of November, usually.

This year, however, this is all causing a smattering of wankery:

"I'm taking my toys and going home!"
"Me too!"
"Me three!"

Small, but tasty. Like aa petit four, in a way.

me, i just wish my t-shirt, mug and merit badges would get here already. woe.

I write a novel every year. But I've never actually signed up for NaNo because I always had a feeling that doing this on an organized basis would take all the fun out of it.

I find that the peer pressure helps me, but I can definitely see how it can be counterproductive for others, yeah. But the idea that it's not worth it if you can't brag on the forums ... the hell?

A lot depends on the person. I found that the only year I succeeded was when I went to all the write-ins and generally was reminded that thousands of other people were giving up their Novembers to write a novel. There's no 'right' way to do NaNoWriMo.

If you're prone to procrastination, I'd stay away from the forums when they're working. But other than that, it's wonderfully chaotic! And you get to verify your WC for a shiny certificate!

Do we still have a F_W lounge over there? I haven't decided if I'm doing it yet, but it'd be nice to have company if I do. (Last year, there was Planning and Preparation. And then Personal Disaster in late October, which meant no NaNo for me. This year? I'm not deciding until midnight tonight/tomorrow morning if I'm going to do it.)

Oh, man. Good luck, site admins.

Whenever NaNo comes up, I'm always in the middle of some sort of project, so I think, "Aww, I can't do NaNo with everyone else because I've already started!"

And then someone pointed out to me yesterday that I could just ignore the word count of what I've done so far and do 50,000 more words on the project, and I felt very silly.

I'm amazed by the wank. I can't remember things ever getting so wanky.

I do note that it appears that the majority of whiners are either n00bs or second-year people, and that the voices of rationality are people who have been to the site and, y'know, actually have a word count.

P.S. I'm over here because the site is down and I need to procrastinate somehow.

The Nanowrimo community on LJ is also getting in on the action. Posts complaining about the site outage have been deleted. One of the mods (ramdonomo) bans people from mentioning it here.

The group owner (alison_sky) pops in here to inform the comm at large that she's not getting paid to run the comm, and also, 'This community? Is MY house. Perhaps you think it's a bit shabby, but you're here, and these are MY RULES. Get it? Got it. Gooood.'

To which dave256 responds, in a post that is sure to vanish soon,

'To the mods: Wow, I so don't care that you're not getting paid. I do all sorts of stuff for free! I don't use it as a badge of honor or a mother-esque guilt trip. There's no reason to berate us, or beg the comparison and evocation of Godwin's Law with Angry Mod Posts(tm).

Good luck. You really do have a (self-inflicted) thankless job. I'll thank you: Thanks, someone has to do it.'

...

On the bright side, the site is up and running again.
