Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you ... the first NaNoWriMo wank of the year!

If you've been to the boards since October, you'll know they've been slow, and that the search function has had to be disabled on and off several times to deal with the load. if you've been around for previous Octobers, you know this is pretty much par for the course whenever that year's boards go up and registration opens -- the site gets flooded, things slow down, the NaNo techies whack things with sticks until things settle down to normality somewhere in the first week of November, usually.

This year, however, this is all causing a smattering of wankery:

"I'm taking my toys and going home!"
"Me too!"
"Me three!"

Small, but tasty. Like aa petit four, in a way.

me, i just wish my t-shirt, mug and merit badges would get here already. woe.

I write a novel every year. But I've never actually signed up for NaNo because I always had a feeling that doing this on an organized basis would take all the fun out of it.

I find that the peer pressure helps me, but I can definitely see how it can be counterproductive for others, yeah. But the idea that it's not worth it if you can't brag on the forums ... the hell?

Yeah I agree having a group of people to commisserate with was helpful.

I'm doing something similar this year except with drawings instead of writing, so I am faking it.

I tried doing it with a comic. I failed. I guess I should try again this year.

Your Hufflepuff Icon rocks! Is it Gankable?

Sure! Just credit to iconfluence on LJ -- she has a bunch more up over here.

I love this one because I'm a Ravenpuff and I knit. (In fact, my NaNovel this year is about magical knitting. Why? BECAUSE I CAN! MUAHAHAHA!)

IMO, it's not a "bragging" thing, it's a "community" thing. The community, online and off (and mostly online, because my local community seems to only have write-ins in the morning when I'm asleep), is why I NaNo. If it was just "write a bunch of words in a month", I'd pick a month with less shit going on. The nutty feel of a bunch of sleep-deprived, over-caffienated people all doing this experience at the same time, questioning each other, procrastinating together, racing and word-warring together, and crying together, that's why I do NaNo. No forums, no NaNo. For me, at least.

A lot depends on the person. I found that the only year I succeeded was when I went to all the write-ins and generally was reminded that thousands of other people were giving up their Novembers to write a novel. There's no 'right' way to do NaNoWriMo.

If you're prone to procrastination, I'd stay away from the forums when they're working. But other than that, it's wonderfully chaotic! And you get to verify your WC for a shiny certificate!

I agree on the procrastination-part. Thought it's always nice to read about how other people are doing worse than I am: it's such a good motivator. ;)

I've been a member of the site since 2001, and I've never actually visited the forums. So. Yeah. I can understand that.

I tend to just hang out in one of the dedicated AIM chats. Word wars and live-time wailing about word count!
