When my people are gone and all that's left is an adjective, will you defend my people?
Granted most of the wank at Daily Kos is patently unfunny these pre-primary days. (Which candidate sucks more, is Hillary a whore, is Daily Kos more homophobic or racist, who is the most oppressed of all? *blergh*)

But the following brought the funny and has not even anything to do with politics pre se, so it goes here.

Mike Erwin posts a Diary complaining about being troll-rated/piled on for complaining over an ethnic slur in another Diary.

Doesn't sound funny yet?

Turns out the "ethnic slur" that offended the OP so much is "vandalize".

Commenters fall all over each other with snark and bad puns.

I LoLed.

The press release immediately rushes to blame the Vandal people

If I squint really hard, I can somewhat see where he's coming from, in a idealist-historian-in-an-ivory-tower way, but he did a spectacularly bad job of expressing himself.

I think that's the problem right there. It's not that he doesn't have a point, it's just that the point is really out (of time and space) there.

Yes, the context is indeed not exactly appropriate for this kind of debate. As he says that this is a pet peeve of his... I wonder if, no matter the circumstances, he always tries to lecture everyone who uses that word. I fear he does.

Someone should ask him if he has written to Wikipedia yet. All those "vandalised" articles...

It was kind of cool when my pastor made the comment of "we call what they did to the Peace Tree 'vandalism', but the original Vandals wouldn't have done this sort of thing".

But, this is not neato social commentary. This is pure, spring-fresh bottled Stupid, with a side of "my karma just hit your dogma" and a heaping spoonful of No Social Life.

If he starts screaming about people thinking of the Vandals, I'm selling tickets, it'll put me through grad school.

If his point was that it was an incorrect usage of the word, then point taken (although it's incredibly anal). But his point seems to be that the word is offensive to Vandals, who... uh, don't exist anymore.

I rather think he is having some quite esoteric views about a slur remaining a slur even if the people in question are not existing anymore, and about the expression promoting wrong historical facts... or something. But while this may be an interesting subject for theoretical discussion, it is indeed somewhat stupid to randomly yell at people who use a widely accepted expression.
