SixApart/Livejournal have the best idea ever!
So, uh, Livejournal.

Go figure.

Pull up a chair. Get out a beer. Take one sip for:

- each invocation of Big Brother (or any other 1984 reference)
- each mention of censorship
- each mention of the First Amendment
- each reiteration of "It's the PARENTS' job!"
- each person flagging the announcement post as offensive
- each person announcing that LJ/6A will no longer see a penny of theirs

Take one gulp for:

- each Godwin's
- each comparison of this new system to rape
- each assertion that the only people complaining are the child molestors who want free porn

And before you know it, you'll be just drunk enough not to care any more.

Yes, parents should take responsibility and should keep an eye on what their children do on the internet, and in the real world. But seriously, according to those people, we should just not use a rating system for movies (Hey, it's the parents' responsibility to stop kids from seeing an adult movie!) or asking for ID when they want buy cigarettes or alcohol (because the parents are responsible for making sure their children don't buy illegal substances at their age) and not bother to show adult movies or TV shows only in the late evening.

Seriously, the ideal human community according to these 'it's the parents job to watch the children, not everyone else's! people has less fitness than that of a pack of lions.

*sighs*

I knew this obligatory Behaviour course would be bad for me.

I'll go back to finishing Nano now.

You know, I'm not even going to read those comments. It's a bright sunny day, work's going well and I'm in a good mood I don't want ruined by wank.
So I'll read them all when I get home.
But really, from what I'm reading, all content is placed under mature filters by the poster/mods, right? And since changing your age on LJ is easier than eating pie, there shouldn't be a problem for anything and LL/SA can say the measures are there, the kids were the cheaters.
Unless everyone's wanking over the flagging issue, which I can see becoming a problem, but come the fuck on.

I, for one, wholeheartedly support this venture! After all, LiveJournal users are quite capable of determining what's inappropriate for children and what isn't, and it's not as if kids lie about their age.

How exactly does someone interpret the word "option" to mean "YOU MUST DO THIS OR FACE DEATH OR IMPRISONMENT"? I mean, really. Fine. Don't flag anything. Nobody's forcing you to. Honest!

The adult content settings are at the very bottom. The text cracks me up:

Not all content on LiveJournal is appropriate for everyone. These settings let you rate your journal as well as determine the level of content you are comfortable with viewing.

The defaults? This journal contains no adult content, collapse explicit adult content only when viewing a journal, and moderate filtering when viewing search results (filter explicit adult and offensive content). Despite my full DOB publicly viewable in my profile.

weird. I see those "flag as inappropriate" or "report" options all over the internet, but the moment LJ decides to use that option as well, it's a huge fucking wobbly. I would think that they would have some kind of built in allowance for spite-flagging.

This is a no-win situation for LJ. They're damned if they do go forward with this feature, and they're damned if they don't.
