Speculation is that it's just an AMAZING COINCIDENCE that Russia is, apparently, the most viciously anti-gay Western industrialized nation.

This is something I've not heard before, so I have no idea.

Yes we're rather...'special' like that.

I'm sure we could give Russia a good run for its money though. Hell, I bet they don't even set their bigotry to song!

As far as I'm aware, nothing in LJ's rules says that "gay" = "automatic 18+ material". Doesn't mean that SUP can't change it to that in the future, but I'm not seeing what relevance anti-gayness has to the content flagging feature.

I think the reason it was brought up was because of the fandom_related_purge that was entirely directed at slash fic earlier - get rid of teh_ghey to impress the Russian?

Me, I have no idea. As I say, I know nothing about sexual politics in Russia.

Ahhh, right. Hmmmm, though if there was a connection, I'd think that either 1) 6A would have continued with the purging in order to court SUP, or 2) 6A would have simply gathered a list of gay journals/communities and let SUP lower the axe.

Well, I can't say anything about their gay issues, but I know that that part of the world is a major supplier of child porn.

The more and more people talk about this, the more it seems like "SixApart sold LiveJournal to a perfectly respecatble business in Russian mafia leaders.

All major companies in Russia are run by the mafia. Didn't you know that?

It's not a gay friendly country. During the elections just now a dozen or so gays and lesbians were arrested in Moscow when they were trying to vote. The first gay pride parade last year was a mess, and I think it might've been banned altogether this year.

I hate to break it to you, but I think that happened to quite a few non-gay people as well. Were they specifically targeting gay people, as opposed to possibly-not-voting-for-Putin-people?

Since when is Russia a "Western" nation?

Since it broke off and joined Antarctica and India floating around somewhere.

One of my friends didn't believe me when I told her Russia was part of Asia. Same with India. And said Antarctica was somewhere near the North Pole.

I never actually got an answer to which continent Russia belongs to. When I asked, they would say "Eurasia". I would say that's not one of the seven continents, and then they would mutter and send me back to my desk.

I do know that a Russian student in my college was very upset when the Asian Student Union denied her request to join.

I always thought of Russia as part of "Asia".

Russia has a great expanse of territory in Asia, but it's mostly empty land. For most of its history, the metropoles and centers of government have been centered in the western half, and they've always had far, far more interaction with other European powers than with any other Asian nations.

Interesting. I did not know that. Most of the history I've had centers around England, thanks to a World Cultures teacher that focused on it and my college not offering much else as a gen ed.

I am still pissed I never got to study The French Revolution.

Random Geography anecdote:
So I'm a oral test, about Europe countries' and their capitals. The teacher asks some tought ones (the little not-countries, some Balkanic contries, etc.) and then she points at Russia. I stare at her. She stares back and tells me that yes, some people have got that one wrong. That's when I realized some people think we are on Mars.

It is, indeed. The subcontinent consists of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan... and quite possibly Myanmar, I think.
