Cool Whip: It's a Floorwax and a Dessert Topping!
Over in the hip_domestics community, [info]petrel asks the age old question, "Cool Whip is the same as whipped cream, right?" followed closely by "How do you make whipped cream anyway?" This draws some slight mumbling from the crowd on the evils of Cool Whip, nothing spectacular, really.

Anyhoo, domestic snark picks it up and upsets a friend of the original poster, [info]coflower, who wouldn't have been upset if everyone knew what an IQ smart person [petrel] is.

Once again, short but sweet. (I should really stop looking at food comms when I'm hungry.)

I don't think the cool whip thing is as stupid as "how do I whip the cream?"

Agreed. I am weeping right now. Weeping.

Oh, please. I know how to make it and I still ended up making butter out of a batch of it at Thanksgiving.

Before I got the Joy of Cooking a few years ago, I somehow thought that making whipped cream was a mostly industrial process involving big machines and precise temperatures and sacrifices to the god of desserts. Or something like that.

Really? I mean, I hear it's harder with a stand mixer, but I use a handbeater, and it's one of the easiest things around.

If I'm feeling lazy, it just goes in the blender for a few seconds.

My mom did the butter thing once and she's a great cook who has done it millions of times.

Yeah, me too. It just seemed so improbably light that I thought some weird process must be involved! I also had to look up how to whip the cream on about.com. I apparently fail at life :(

See, this is why you need a five-year-old with a mechanical hand mixer, standing on a kitchen chair while the table is being cleared for dessert: no way that person can overbeat the cream. It worked for Grandma S for twelve kids and an uncountable number of grand-children and random kids off the street...

"Hey you! Yeah, you! Get in here and take this mixer!"

How confused were those random kids?

Not very, in that they'd basically invited themselves to dinner first- this was Yelm in the 1950s, when the first rule of certain neighborhoods was that feeding kids was a community responsibility.
