Cool Whip: It's a Floorwax and a Dessert Topping!
Over in the hip_domestics community, [info]petrel asks the age old question, "Cool Whip is the same as whipped cream, right?" followed closely by "How do you make whipped cream anyway?" This draws some slight mumbling from the crowd on the evils of Cool Whip, nothing spectacular, really.

Anyhoo, domestic snark picks it up and upsets a friend of the original poster, [info]coflower, who wouldn't have been upset if everyone knew what an IQ smart person [petrel] is.

Once again, short but sweet. (I should really stop looking at food comms when I'm hungry.)

It is? I thought that it was a statement of fact?

I've always thought that mocking someone for not knowing how to do something more complex than tying their shoes (and that is not required for their lives/jobs) = instant fail.

It was the "I cook, and I didn't know that!" part that pushed it over the edge.

Whipping cream is less complex than tying your shoes, actually. Tying your shoes involves tricksy looping and knotting!

And years of practice! And mine still come undone, so I always have to double knot them.

It's really kind of a pain in the ass, tying your shoes. This would probably explain why I am so attracted to slip-ons whenever I go shoe shopping.

You mean there's people who only do one knot and it doesnt come undone? Man, maybe they can teach me the trick.

See? Complicated! I'll stick to slip-on shoes and whipped cream, thanks.

But not together, because ew.

Thanks to those damn velcro sneakers my kids went to kindergarten without knowing how to tie their shoes.

I'm blaming the shoes because I'm a bad parent.

Mine probably would've, too, but her kindergarten required that she know how, so her preschool (same school) taught it. They sent home letters to all the parents and everything, telling them to make sure they got their kids shoes with laces because they were having lessons, and all the parents were all "Laces?!? NOOOOOOOOO!!!" because young children + shoelaces = PAIN IN MY ASS.

Ayup.

Actually, you can make whipped cream by putting heavy cream in a jar with a tight lid and shaking, although that works best for single servings.

Oooh, I'll have to try that sometime. I would insist upon calling it shaken cream instead of whipped cream, though.

It also works if you need just a bit of soft meringue, but the jar has to be spotlessly clean with no grease or soap residue.

One time out of desperation I tried to make a meringue in a blender. So didn't work.

It is possible to fail utterly at the simple task of whipped cream while in possession of an otherwise dazzling array of cooking skills.

Seriously, I have not successfully made decent whipped cream ever. I have failed at whipped cream in the same meal where I have succeeded at risotto that would make Anthony Bourdain yank down his pants and start masturbating furiously RIGHT THERE AT THE TABLE (so I'm told anyway) and triple-layer pumpkin cheesecake and all the other Iron Chef-like trimmings... but for some reason, I have never been able to make proper whipped cream. *hangs head, and rightly so*

Heh, trust me, I know tons of people who have underwhipped or overwhipped or made butter in an attempt to make whipped cream.

It was just the idea of literally not knowing that whipped cream = cream + whipping that was cracking me up, especially coming from someone who knows how to cook.

I realize know that the recipe for whipped cream is not nearly so obvious as it always seemed to be.

Then f you could get him to hold a whisk at the same time, maybe you could get your cream whipped after all!

If you have a stick blender and a clean jar that the stick blender fits into, it works well. Fill the jar about 1/3 of the way to 1/2 full, then put the stick blender in. After about three pumps up and down- viola- nicely whipped cream, soft enough for topping. Pump it more for harder creamohgodididn'ttypethat.

I usually use a salsa jar sans salsa- nice wide mouth, and if you still have the cap you can keep it whipped and ready for a day or two.

...now I can not make whipped cream without giggling like a madwoman, great.
