in [info]montreal, [info]minarin feels tipping waiters is not only unnecessary, but kinda rude. surprisingly, people disagree!

Barely minimum wage? Jeebus, when I was waiting tables servers were lucky to get more than half the local minimum wage as base pay. Or some places I used to deliver pizza at, the drivers didn't get wages at all, delivery charge and tips was all they got. Some nights I made a killing, others I did the math and thought, "I made $2.26 an hour, oh joy."

I was under the impression that servers in Canada were paid a living wage . . . ?

I might be thinking of BC only, but who knows.

I am under the same impression, although there may be parts of Canada where there is a two-tier minimum wage with a lower one for people who can expect to earn tips?

But when I worked food service, I got minimum wage for the province I was in.

I'm dim on how Canada works as far as tipped employee wages; it's looking like some provinces are similar to a number of US states far as bartenders and servers.

Quebec is one of those provinces: normal min. wage is $8, min. wage for people getting tips is $7.25

At least it's only 75 cents less. In a lot of places in the US the difference between tipped and non-tipped minimum wages is a matter of dollars.

The fliers in my restaurant say that server minimum wage is $2.15, whereas minimum-minimum wage is about $5.15. I think?

Of course, those are federal, not state. The state minimum wage is closer to $6.15. And I THINK the servers get $3.15 at my restaurant.

(I get $4.15, as a host. :) But I get fewer tips.)

Wait, what</>?! I thought the higher wage requirement always applied. It can't be legal to pay people that little.

Goodness' sakes, here even the McDonald's are paying upwards of $10/hr.

Here's the thing: It's not just a presumption that your tips will take you over.

If your wage and tips together don't add up to minimum wage, then your employer has to make up for the difference. And there's actual paperwork on this, 'cause everyone reports their tips at the end of the night. Y'know?

Of course, this hardly ever, ever happens. At least at my restaurant, and at least for the servers who talk to me about it--they all seem to make a pretty okay amount of money in that. They make a good bit more than I do, and I tend to end up with over $8 an hour.

(Of course, there are WAY more servers than hosts at the moment, so I'm getting more hours than a heck of a lot of them . . .)
