Wait, what</>?! I thought the higher wage requirement always applied. It can't be legal to pay people that little.

Goodness' sakes, here even the McDonald's are paying upwards of $10/hr.

Here's the thing: It's not just a presumption that your tips will take you over.

If your wage and tips together don't add up to minimum wage, then your employer has to make up for the difference. And there's actual paperwork on this, 'cause everyone reports their tips at the end of the night. Y'know?


Of course, this hardly ever, ever happens. At least at my restaurant, and at least for the servers who talk to me about it--they all seem to make a pretty okay amount of money in that. They make a good bit more than I do, and I tend to end up with over $8 an hour.

(Of course, there are WAY more servers than hosts at the moment, so I'm getting more hours than a heck of a lot of them . . .)
