Would you please look at what they sell?!
In vintage_ads, the LJ community where people post --wait for it!-- vintage ads, [info]amadoj0nes posts a Camel advertising in an entry titled "Behold, a blatantly vaginophallic product mascot!" complete with the following sentence(s).

They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell a product that causes cancer.
They sell..a product... that causes.. cancer.
They sell a motherf*#@ing product that causes CANCER.

Mostly, folks' replies tend to be from the CRY MOAR variety, to which dear [info]amadoj0nes answers by repeating what seems to be his signature:

They sell a product that causes cancer.

They sell.. A product... That causes...Cancer.

Help me out here. Any generation younger than mine takes about 5-6 repetitions in order for obvious things to sink in.

And people keep saying CRY MOAR.

Wait. So...liquor doesn't cause cancer? Or are the only kinds of cancers that count gigantic lung tumors?

Because I seem to recall something about alcohol use/abuse and oral/esophageal cancer...

Yep. My father never smoked a cigarette a day in his life. Not even once to try it. He was an alcoholic and died at 57 from a tumor that started on his tonsil.

I'm just sad that Joe Camel is apparently old enough to be posted on a vintage ads community. :(

Yeah, this is totally a generational thing, because back in my day nobody smoked. They told us "it causes cancer" once and by golly we got the message.

Oh, wait...

I originally read it as vagina-phobic, which I took as snarky codewords for GAY, *rolled my eyes* and then went I clicked realised it was phallic and became very confused.

And now I can't look at the camels face without seeing it, as having some sort of mutated penis fused on it.

It's shocking to me that the wank consists of the community members jumping up to fight for their right to party smoke, rather than dogpiling him for stating the obvious as though he's just made a shocking new discovery that no one had ever heard before.
Well, not that shocking.

But they sell a product that causes cancer. They sell a product, that causes cancer. They sell a product. That causes. Cancer. This product they sell? Causes cancer. You know, cancer? This product they sell? Totally causes it. And they sell it! This product! That causes cancer! A product they sell causes cancer! It's sold by them. And it causes cancer. They sell it. A cancer-causing product. They SELL a PRODUCT that CAUSES CANCER. They. Sell a product. That causes CANCER. Did you know this product they sell causes cancer? Because it causes cancer, and they sell that product. This--oh fuck I can't do this anymore.

Here's an anecdote I've always liked.
[info]lovelyzelda
2008-01-15 09:13 pm UTC (link)
Back before the cartoon mascot ban, my dad was in a 7-11 that had a big Joe Camel cardboard cutout.

And upon seeing it, this little boy pointed to it and said to his father, "That's Joe Camel. He's cool."

Since I quit smoking on the 7th, I should've known better than to read this. Especially while drinking coffee. Must. Not. Start. Getting. Cancer. Again. Because of. Internet.

*facepalm* I'm not a fan of smoking by any means, but ye gods, what the "motherf*#@ing" hell? Yes. We know. SHUT UP. Does he really expect to get a bunch of people to go, "OH NOES! CANCER! I SHALL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW!" or "Yes! DOWN WITH THE EVIL CANCER-MAKERS! We shall... well, we... um. WE'LL PULL DOWN THEIR PANTS IN PUBLIC!"

What does he want, for the entire community to somehow go back in time so that they can stop the Joe Camel adverts -- kind of like they already did? (Not the timetravel part. Unless he knows something we don't. MAYBE THAT'S IT! He knows that the key to the end of widespread cigarette advertisments lies in a random blogger in that community who will take his words to heart and invent time travel SOLELY FOR THAT PURPOSE! Hallelujah!)

I like the vintage_ads comm for the most part. When [info]amadoj0nes made that Joe Camel post, he'd used the the same vaginophallic header for another post either just befpore or just after the Joe Camel post which really had people confused.

He/she also has that horribly annoying robot-with-the oil-pump-action-penis as his icon which is far more annoying than cigarettes causing cancer, OMG.
