Pie wank!
Shepherd's pie, that is. Or is it cottage pie?

I can't improve on the writeup of the friend who sent me the link:

Admittedly, the 'recipe' is a horrid approximation of the real thing, but the determination of the commenters to be gratuitously rude for very little reason has to be admired. And the descent to name calling and arguments about the US and UK and (inevitably) the War is tremendous. Football is in there too. There's also a brief display of homphobia and Bush hatred - intermingled - which can be ignored. (And then there are the sweet, plaintive posts from people who want to talk about cooking...)

Tony Blair starts things off:

That's a Cottage pie, shepherd's pie is made with lamb, the clue is in the name, shepherds don't herd cows do they?

Americans get so many things wrong, that doesn't mean you have to go along the wrongness, use the correct phrases and terminology and educate your people.

Stop perpetuating ignorance.

Which gets the reply:

Well then why not make it out of the shepherds themselves dumb***?

Other Tasty Samples:

Tony,  I can see your point about subbing apples for bananas.  Surely, replacing a pomaceous fruit from a tree with a herbaceous cluster-fruit would change the general structure and consistency. And I see how it correlates: replacing one red-meated, grass-fed ungulate's flesh with another will surely cause the entire flan to collapse, so to speak.  You should find three other people that honestly care about whether or not their casseroles have cow or sheep in the mix and unite to form a super-team that roams the world looking for meat pie infractions.  It'd be a better use of your time.

Now I assume you are American. You seem to be ignorant of many things.

Even your desserts are offensive.

What does WWII have to do with anything? Last I checked, Americans only got involved because they got attacked. You weren't saving anybody, you were defending your own country.

Heroically, I kept myself from jumping in to cry, "Don't mention the War!"

ETA: [info]alya1989262 has created a guide to the wank. In the form of a pie chart, of course.

We always used chicken in our Shepard's pie. But we called it Pate Chinois (which I never got, because there's nothing remotely chinese about it) so I guess that merely by being French we destroy English values.

That said, bringing up WW2 always makes me think of the Robot Chicken 'Little Hitler' skit(s).

1) It is technically a Cottage Pie.

2) That's a horrible recipe for even an omg fast Cottage Pie and I am honestly surprised it didn't advise instant mashed potato, given.

3) The back and forth NO U about whether the British or Americans are worse is really amusing.

Well then why not make it out of the shepherds themselves dumb***?

Given that logic, I don't think I'd like to sample this person's cottage pie. Lamb or beef would be much less of an issue than picking lumps of plaster and thatch out of your teeth.

your rotund, Meat Pie Forensics Master's Degree'd self

O SNAP.

I agree with the reasonable chap who's patiently trying to explain that in the States we don't get a lot of ground lamb in the grocery, and we have to "make do with minced moo."

But that is one heinous recipe. It's recipes like that what cause international incidents.

I'm now going to add 'USA Freedom Hamburger' to the beginning of all my meals. USA Freedom Hamburger Casserole, USA Freedom Hamburger Spaghetti, USA Freedom Hamburger Hamburger... it all sounds delicious.

Like freedom.

Well, I've nothing to add. I just wanted to be sure that my pie icon showed up in the proper thread for once!

Though, for what it's worth, Shepard's pie in my family has always been veggie rather than meat.

It'd have to involve the Germans too, since the German resteraunt out here has Shephard's Pie with beef.

But then they already invoked the Germans, didn't they?

I don't care what it's called, my dad has been singing its praises recently since my grandmother made it for him and my uncles all the time when they were little and now I just really want some.

Is the linked recipe a good one? If not does anybody have a good recipe for it? Moo flavored please.

What a horrible recipe. It sounds boring without onions, herbs and tomato puree. Who needs gravy? Just add a slug of wine and if too runny, slaked cornflour. We call it Shepherd’s Pie but do admit it should be Cottage Pie.

Just love those comments. That has got to be one of the funniest wanks I’ve read.

My family calls it Cow Pie, on account of it being made of cow (plus saying 'cow pie' is really funny when all the children in a family are under twelve). And we make it like this:

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 large onion, chopped
1 lb ground beef
1 tsp salt
1 tsp thyme
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 cup undiluted beef stock
1 cup mashed carrots
2 cups mashed potatoes

Preaheat oven to 350F. Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole.

In a frypan, heat the butter until foamy. Add the onions and cook until transparent, then add the beef and cook until lightly browned. Season with the spices and blend in the stock. Turn into prepared casserole and spoon first carrots and then mashed potatoes over the top to make three layers.

Bake for 30 minutes or until potatoes begin to brown, and serve with tossed salad. Makes 4 servings.

I like how the original author responded early on, explaining that she knew the complainer was correct but that the term "shepherd's pie" was simply more common, so she used that-- and no one seems to have noticed.

This is making me wish I lived in NYC. The Shepherd's Pie at Tea & Sympathy (if you can manage to snag one of their like 10 chairs) is the best stuff I ever had. Guess it's "cottage pie", but it's fucking amazing whatever you call it.

Well, I'm British, so... so just assume my head has already exploded, because I eat this stuff all the time. My head explodes a lot on the internet, but I have created a robotic backup. Which refuses to accept that someone cannot differentiate between beef and lamb and attach an appropriate moniker to a pie based on the main meat ingredient.
