Anonymous declares War on Scientology
Yep, that's right. It seems that Tom Cruise's googly moogly brainwashing video and it's subsequent removal from the net bunched up anonymous' panties. So it's war! They have named their movement "Project Chanology" and you can read all the sordid details on Encyclopedia Dramatica and The Insurgent Wiki and read what anonymous is up to on the discuss boards ED and IW.

So far, the plan of attack is a massive barrage of Denial of Service attacks that have been unleashed upon various scientology sites. It seems that one website, Religiousfreedomwatch.org (currently down), has offered a reward for various participants.

The Project Chanologists want the word out. They've created a video of intent that has been dugg nearly 5,000 times . News of the hacking of some top secret Scientology documents has been dug over 3,000 times. They've even put out a Press Release. Project Chanology wants you to spread the word of anonymous.

So far, few sites have picked up on it. A few that have taken notice are The Budapest Times, Wikinews, Gawker, and USAtoday.com.

Even the cute little denizens of Gaia are going at it but oh noes! dissenters!

Overall, it's pretty amusing. I'm sure I'm not the only one that wonders if this “hacktivism” can really bring down the “Church” of Scientology. After all, let's face it, Anonymous has way more free time on its hands than Scientology has money, lawyers, and movie stars put together.

Edit: Insugent Wiki links are currently being redirected to ebausmworld. =/ All better.

I usually try to be open minded towards religion, but I make an exception for Scientology. Those guys are fucking evil.

And they are also batshit. But it's hard to laugh when people actually have their lives ruined and even die because of this batshit. It's like a religious pyramid-scam, mixed with snake oil medical quackery, sprinkled liberally with lawyers.

I'm rooting hard for Anonymous.

I'd read about the quackery of Scientologists before and I always just wrote them off as gullible nutballs, but then I saw this and was pretty pissed off. It's bad enough they're scamming and brainwashing people, but they're killing them too? Dirty sneaky bastards.

Yeah, I've been reading about things like that since the 80's. They routinely put people under a polygraph and have them confess all their embarrassments and sins into a microphone as part of clearing their "engrams" If they later decide to leave the church, those recordings are used to blackmail them.

Erg, I wanted to watch more but I had to stop when the warning for graphic images popped up.

Be glad you did. Except for one, the images weren't worse than you'd see on the news. The hollow feeling they left in my soul, on the other hand...

Ack... I stopped there too. Was too much of a coward to continue. But I still want to know what happened. *Braces herself and opens the thing again*

I saved the image and edited out the graphic photos. They were pretty gross, even if it was only 3 of them. Then I realized the file is huge and I had to upload it to a free download manager. You can download the edited version on sendspace. I also snipped off the credits page (too lazy to type it up) and you can see that here.

Yah. An acquaintance's father was fairly high up in the CoS when he was convicted of embezzlement. In exchange for a reduced sentence, he agreed to tell the Feds anything they wanted about the CoS.

I found out about this when the acquaintance showed up at a friend's house because they had had several bomb threats, and then some strange cars kept driving slowly by the house.

I'm not sure they really count as a "religion." Cult at most, and there's not much spiritual about it.

But courts all over the world have decided that Scientology is a religion! How dare you disagree with a court!

Seriously, that orientation video is hilarious.

I don't consider them a religion either. They are a fauxdeism. Real religion is about supporting it's parishioners, not making huge profits off of them.

And man, I'm bringing down the funny here. Tom Cruise looks like he should be selling flowers (or perhaps his ass) for Christ or something.

...My principles require me to go on record with a statement of disagreement that Scientology should be an exception, but my common sense is telling me that arguing the point further would not only waste both our time, it would bore people, so meh.

Scientology isn't my only exception, I lump the Rajneeshees and the Taliban and others who believe in promoting their religion through murder, but yeah, srs bzness and all.

Nah, I get you. I just personally make the differentiation between "the religion itself" and "the wack-jobs who take it to an extreme" and focus my criticism on extremism itself, but that's more of a semantical thing and tends to get Teal Deer on everyone.

Anyway.

I get you too. The only thing that keeps me from totally dissing as a religion is that the followers are faithful, even if the higher ups are just in it for the power/money/sadism.

I was in a cult. Not the $cienos, but I'm rooting hard for Anonymous too. I just wish I could find a way to make them declare war on the bunch that I was with because they're much smaller and use the internet as a recruiting tool, so I suspect it would be easy (and amusing) to /b/ them.
