Teachers are supposed to be held to a higher standard!
WARNING: serious teal deer ahead. the people involved like to get wordy, it seems. Get yourself a cup of tea before you start reading this. Or maybe not, as you might do a few spit takes.

So this lovely story has been developing over the last week or so. In Ohio there is a town called Springfield, and in that town is a school called South High School. One of the assistant principals for South, Karl Perkins, was recently suspended, and he could possibly be fired. Why? He wrote erotic poems under the pseudonym "Antonio Love." It's a pretty special story, but the reaction to it is even better. You see, the Springfield News-Sun website has a forum for each article, and anyone can respond to an article.

As a note, you have to be registered to get linked to specific post, but you can easily scroll down to read responses. The oldest responses are at the bottom. Also, it seems like older responses get deleted as newer ones are made, as some really wanky posts are gone by now. However, this is still pretty amazing.

commonsensegal takes the punishment route: Teachers are public employees who must be held to a higher standard. When you are working with children from PreK-12, the standards can not be high enough. That teacher should have his license revoked.

south high school students weigh in with amazing typing skills: YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME….THE ONLY BLACK AFRICAN AMERICAN ADULT IN SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT US YOUNG BLACK AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS AND YOUR GOING TO FIRE HIM OVER SOME NONSENSE.WHY CAN SOMEONE’S PAST BE HELD AGANIST HIM?HE WAS NOT CONMENTING SEXUAL ACTS.LET THE YEARS OF SERVICE TO SOUTH HIGH AND SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS SPEAK FOR HIM!!!!!

RJ makes a good point: Maybe he should just be fired for being illiterate? His book title uses the word “versus” rather than “verses”…

wow thinks that we should blame the parents: This is definitely a witch hunt - no question about it. No matter his profession, each of us is entitled to a private life and that may consist of whatever each of us choose - that is life in America, people! Erotic poems written under a pseudonym in one’s own time and published for anyone’s consumption is far from the issue. This must be some powerful parent in the district who, because they failed to do their job as a parent, is pushing the school board/district to heal their shame for them.

I personally like william's satirical comment about all of this: I agree with the Springfield Schools. In fact, I think they should take this one step further by requiring all school faculty and members to keep a log of their sexual activities for Board review. They should disclose date and time, duration, positions, outside assistance (organic or mechanical), and whether or not anyone “won.” Visual aids are optional. These reports should be presented at the Board meeting during a public hearing for all to see.

The big wank of this post, though, is started when a poster by the name of jesse posts this:

In response to an earlier comment, teachers are not underpaid. Most teachers in the area make well over 50,000 per year for working a part-time job. Besides all of the time off in the winter, they have so many days off during the school year. There is now a winter break prior to a week off for spring break. With service hours, lunch, and other reasons the average teacher is only in front of their students 3-4 hours per day. There is hardly any work that needs to be done outside of class.

wifeofateacher responds to jesse with this: JESSE, who gave you your misinformation? The only reason teachers are paid when they are not in session is because they CHOOSE to have it taken from their pay and held until those breaks. And well over $50,000 a year? I’d love to know where that is! My husband is obviously in the wrong district!

Leave this guy alone. He was young and stupid. He didn’t use children in the material he wrote and he used an alias! Get off your high horses!

Also, sara responds to jesse in a comment that takes three posts to say.

Jesse - Please tell me which school district will pay me over $50,000 to work part time!! Or even full time? I sure don’t make that much after teaching full-time for 10 years! Or better said, what planet are you on? Every teacher where I work puts in a minimum of 7 1/2 hours a day, usually more, at school, and we’re lucky if we get a half hour without kids to eat lunch. Hardly any work that needs to be done outside of class!? Are you serious?! You really don’t know any teachers, do you?

continued - Take into account the time spent during evenings and weekends grading papers, figuring grades, writing lessons, and researching new information. Plus the continuing education we are required to take in order to keep our jobs, which we have to pay for ourselves. Really, I’m lucky if I have an hour every day to sit down and talk to my own children. And I don’t get paid to sit around doing nothing in the summer.

continued - I can choose to get smaller pay checks year round so that I don’t risk foreclosure every summer. As for snow days, those aren’t free days, if we have more than a set number, we will have to go longer into the summer. Try getting the facts next time, Jesse!

That's pretty much it, though, as jesse does not respond to any of the posts against her.

There's a lot more there, but it's mostly people saying the same stuff as what I've already put here. Go ahead and read through it, though. It's hilarious.

But wait, the fun's not over! On Thursday, the students at South High School decided to protest in support of Mr. Perkins. Over 100 students walked out of their 2nd period classes and held signs and chanted. Then they ran the halls. Yeah, they're not so go at protests. However, this article also has some important information. The board, which was reviewing his files, "found no other records of misconduct." Also, this book had been published after he was hired by South High School.

Some very amusing wank is started over the issue of morality in school. This wank is started by john, who says, " Are you kidding me. This is not a popularity contest. This is not a racial issue. This is a moral issue. Mr. Perkins stepped all over the moral clause in his contract. He may have written this trash when he was in college but he published it in 2007, while he was an employee of Springfield City Schools. His job at South High is Discipline. How can teach morals when have none. Mrs. Harper, do the right thing and let Mr. Perkins go so he can pursue something else. He is a bad influence."

And, of course, that sets people off. joanna is the first to respond to john's comments, saying, "John, How can you say this is a morale issue. How may times have you watch either porn or looked at an adult magazine. Are you a professional? Is so then where are your morales? Who are you to judge anybody? This man wrote Poems, For god sake Poems, about Love and Sex. THAT IS LIFE! Or do you not have a family?"

john responds to this by saying, "Joanna, If you think that turning satin sheets into murky swamps is poetic love, then maybe you need to go back to school as well. Antonio Love’s site was not blocked. There was no filter requiring acknowledement that you are 18 or over. Any child with a parent’s credit card could have read this garbage. And as far as my life is concerned, I’m living the dream and I don’t have to write vulgar poetry that belittles the female gender just to make myself feel a little better, or taller"

joanna attempts to tell john by talking about her masters degrees, and she ironically misspells hypocrite: "John, I think you are sadly mistaking sir. I need no more school as i have 2 masters degrees. And you quote very well from a person who disagrees with what was written. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” Sorry your not up yet, And its funny how his morale according to you is so low, how is it you know so much about his site, you say you dont have to write vulgar poetry to degrade women, then why the hell did you read it, please dont be a hipacrit."

john comes back with...well, a comeback: "Joanna, You must have gotten your Master’s degrees through the mail. First, let me help… “your” should be you are, “morale” should be morals, “hipacrit” should be hypocrite. Second, unlike most people, I actually wanted to read the book before I formed an opinion. It is trash. And I am shocked that a man of his education didn’t know better."

Then another John shows up, defending joanna by saying, "Like I said sir, typing may not be my thing but I am a very well educated person again 2 masters degrees, what do you have? And again “LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE” I wonder what dirty little secrets you have sir, What is Johns fantasy? Women little children, I don’t know but you sure are interested in this subject. Lastly I say WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE"

But wait! Is this all sockpuppetry? The original john says so. You see, in order to post on the Springfield News Sun website, you need to provide an email address. john connected the dots, and he says, "Joanna,John(AKA) Jason, It doesn’t take a Brain Surgeon to figure out that your in the same family using the same E-Mail account. And the Purdue family, you know the ones that went to South and some that still go to South, doesn’t have a psychologist IN THE FAMILY. at least not one that is Licensed by the state. Of course in your fantasy world, your probably all poets. lol"

So, by the end of it all, it seems that everyone has forgotten the issue at hand and is busy trying to make a point about...well, I'm not quite sure. But whatever it is, it's still hilarious to watch. People are still making posts, too, so I'll update if the wank gets even funnier.

commonsensegal takes the punishment route: Teachers are public employees who must be held to a higher standard.

Definitely true in Japan, anyway. They always told us to watch our conduct in public because we were technically instructors and as such the restrictions on proper behavior in public were astonishing, but I didn't believe it until I had four different coworkers and a police officer pull me aside to chew me out for running a yellow on my bike (this in a country where people regularly run reds and nobody blinks an eye.)

In regards to the wank: LOL terrible 'erotic' poetry. LOL more at the guy who thinks teachers are overpaid; other people have said it before, but man, where does he live?

So this guy is in trouble for writing erotic poetry that had nothing to do with his students under a pseudonym, some art teacher's been fired because he made abstract paintings with his butt that had nothing to do with his students under a pseudonym... I guess the basic theme is "have no life outside your class"? But then if you have no life outside your class, that sets one up for Letourneau incidents, and God knows we end up with enough of those every year as it is, so I guess the message is that "teachers should have no lives" period.

So you need a credit card to read them and that means the site is unprotected? Not his fault if kids are stealing their parents credit cards.

Who wants to bet that if he hd written poems about violence, all would be well?

Sex poetry is obviously a dangerous thing that children should be protected from. I mean, I know how much /I/ loved reading poetry when I was in school.

And poetry about enjoying sex is obviously just going to warp a child's mind. Sex is SIN we must bear to continue the species.

Man. PreK-12 teachers are clearly the scapegoats of our entire society. They can do nothing right, and a billion things wrong, and we keep making it harder for them to do things right. Sometimes I think we're nicer to ex-cons.

People who are in contact with children should not ever have sex, think about sex, or acknowledge that they have at some timeever thought about sex at some time in the past. Ever. Please, think of the children. And not of the yaoi.

Dude what. He wasn't, like, reading them over the intercom or anything, was he?

But, you know what's an even bigger problem? Some people who have kids of their own are doing this kind of thing, too! It's appalling! They're supposed to be role models, for god's sake; it's just plain wrong. Kids don't need to be around that kind of thing. >(

So, I propose that anyone with a child under 18 shouldn't be allowed to write about sex, have sex (except with their duly wedded spouse, of course, in the dark, in missionary position), or talk about sex (unless it's "the talk"). And really, they shouldn't be doing much of anything that their kid shouldn't be doing! So no drinking, smoking, or watching R-rated movies, either.

...I think that covers it, but I may have been lax.
